Has anyone found UK based sources for electric motors and
controllers?
Marek is looking at a 3KW motor like the one from Golden Motors

I communicated directly with Lois at Golden Motor. The cost was
still more than I could justify to myself. the motor itself
wasn't bad, but the ancillaries stopped me dead.

I recently found a UK company called Radwood that listed the
HPM3000B without a price but with a "obtain a quote" option.
Their quote was £450 + VAT +delivery for the motor. I also asked
for a price for the VEC300 controller (because they didn't list
the VEC200 which would have been a better choice) and that was
£550 + VAT. So £1,240 delivered (in 6-8 weeks). That is quite a
difference from the $300 that Americans suggest they pay.

I was considering going down the electric route but don't know
enough.

Hi,
I've not built an electric cyclekart but I've a fair bit of
experience of building 24v wheelchair systems.
The motor you have pointed to looks a bit wimpy to me, I notice
they do not give performance curves for the motor so I'm a bit
suspicious. A good clue is to look at the output shaft,
anything less that 1/2" , 12mm is not likely to be up to the
job.
The best motors around were the Brigs and Stratton "pancake"
ETEK motors

the 3kw model would
be best for a cyclekart.
As for batteries I would go for Lifepo4 batteries rather than
lithium ion nmc batteries on safety grounds. With 100 AH
prismatic cells you would "only" need 16 cells to get 48-50
volts rather than the 400 ish 18650 cells that would be needed
to be spot welded into banks of 30 and then paralleled up to get
the same capacity. Bearing in mind that one dead cell means
no go and possibly a catastrophic failure (fire) big prismatic
cells are much safer and simpler all round.
One alternative would be 15AH Headway cells, though you would
need 96 of those to get 100AH.

An electric cyclekart is going to be an expensive project
compared to the Honda engined car. Like electric cars, it
sounds simple but turns out quite hard to get right, ask VW,
Jaguar etc ...........

I was a bit negative in my previous post and thinking about
electric karts there is always the option to go old school DC
brushed motor. Flowfit sell this motor to drive hydraulic pumps
it will actually do 3kw .

It's rated at 24v but DC motors run happily on increased voltage
so 36v or even 48v would probably be ok provided you limit the
motor power in yhe controller . You would get 3kw at 120A at 36V
. 4QD do a good range of DC motor controllers, the pro 160
high current looks to be up to the job but I would talk to them
first.
Motor £180
Controller £300
So it's still the thick end of £500 without wiring emergency
cutout and throttle etc.
Battery price is still over £1000 for liFePo4 and BMS but you
could test with lead acid car batteries and upgrade to lithium
if it works well.
It's not hard to see why the gx200 CVT and chains are so
popular.

I have just received a motor and controller from Wuxi Helanda
Mechanical and Electric through Alibaba.
The motor is a 3kW BLDC motor

The Controller goes with it

They cost $220 together but with air carriage, duties, VAT,
Handling charges, brokerage, and PayPal fees they actually cost
me £369.09. They took just a week to arrive!
On the downside, the documentation is pretty poor. I had to
negotiate to get a data table and a graph of the motor
performance (which was for 60V) and the original Controller
documentation was just a quick guide that was all in Chinese. So
I had to learn about Google Translate-ing images and then
workout what some of the terms meant e.g. Turn Handle => Twist
Grip etc. I managed to get the company's English translation but
it was not a lot better.
The company makes these motors for large tricycles - they even
sell a rear axle with differential, motor and drum brakes all as
one assembled item. I'd guess that they must work reasonably but
whether they really are suitable for a cyclekart will probably
take a year to find out. For now I need to test that it works at
all, so I need to mount it and make up loads of connections and
find 48V worth of batteries... the journey continues.
