Drilling rear axle

Good evening, Currently building.a part built cycle kart. Have
the rear kart axle all mounted and it has the circlips at the
ends. I have concerns with these holding the wheels on and have
heard of people drilling the end of the shaft so it can be
drilled and tapped.
My question is is this necessary and if so what size are people
using and does one need to be lefthand thread. Regards Matty

Hi Matty, I had similar concerns although the circlips appear to
hold up well. I simply moved my wheels inwards 8 mm & fitted
split locking collars as well as circlips. The split collars
offer a much stronger fixing than the single grub screw type.
Good luck with the rest of your build

My 25mm axle has each end drilled and tapped M8 (RH) x 25 deep.
(Axle was supplied by Mark @ Cyclekart Workshop).

I drill mine, just because I can. I had seen a wheel walk the
circlip off at Tieton 2 so decided it was woth the 5 minutes
work. The Napier will have split collars because I want to play
with rear track width.
