No spark on Lifan
By: DavidandCarolynne Date: March 1, 2025, 8:36 am

Hi all,
I've read the thread on wiring and it is of help but...
The low oil switch and its wiring are removed.
I have the cutout connection disconnected and I have the cover
off the flywheel and I've double checked the gap between the
coil polls and the magnet (.4mm).
When I whizz it over with the plug out and resting on the
cylinder head there is no spark.
The only thing I can figure is the ignition unit is no good.
It's all brand new, but I've removed the governor, so I can't
return the engine.
Am I missing something blindingly obvious?

Hi David& Carolynne , are you sure the black lead from back of
engine is not earthing. This lead kills the ignition spark when
connected to earth. Is it an electric start.
Cheers Nick

Yes - the black lead is connected to thin air.
It is electric start. I'm whizzing it over using the starter
motor. But, as far as I can see, none of the electric start
gubbins has anything to do with the spark??

Hmmm that sounds frustrating.
Forgive me if you already know this, but I would want to check
the ignition isn't being earthed. With the ignition switch in
the run/on position, I'd check at the connector near the
ignition that the wire highlighted in yellow below isn't
earthed. If it is, I'd work backwards disconnecting each in
turn to find where the earth connection is.

Definitely not earthed, nor connected to anything.

Is there a spark just of the end of the ht lead with no plug or
cap attached?

Good question. I have tried a known good spark plug... but not
the end of the HT lead.
I shall try that tomorrow.

No luck.. I've ordered a new igntion unit. Less than a tenner -
hey-ho!

Just a thought, the original cap on these engines is a resistor,
if yuo use a resistor type plug (NGK has an R in the plug code)
you will get a very weak spark, if any.

Thank you all for the input. All very helpful, as usual!
The replacement coil arrived and I installed it just now. We
have sparks!
The plug that came with the engine is a resistor plug. The
spark I'm getting could be fatter. Maybe I'll get a
non-resistor plug.
