Coach Painting Aluminium Body Panels !
By: jon.pearce Date: January 12, 2025, 6:36 am

Hi,
I have been told that a lot of the 1920 and 1930s Race cars were
brush painted with coach enamel.
My GN "Small CoGNac" build should be painted in "Deep Brunswick
Green".
Anyone had any experience with the "Etch Primer and Roller"
application techniques for Coach Enamel onto aluminium panels ?
I have watched plenty of Youtube videos on this subject...BUT I
want to know if its been done successfully by a Cyclekarter who
has managed to achieve a good finish !
Thanks.

It can be done with reasonably good results. I coach painted my
Pembleton three wheeler and I plan to do the same for my Riley.
It is laborious, but worthwhile. I believe that the slightly
imperfect finish of coach painting suits a pre war car and it is
cheaper than spray painting. PM or email me and I can fill you
in on the details.

I would be tempted to aerosol the etch primer, you only need a
thin layer to achieve the required key. This leaves a flatter
surface for the enamel reducing brush marks on the finish.
I have used tractor paint on a few things and it went well over
a single etch layer, with a wet and then dry brush. Not used
coach enamel but will be interested to see the results as I feel
2k will be too perfect for a “period correct” finish and ths was
a method I was thinking about for my bodywork.

I have used products from Craftmaster paint. Where I put a coat
of etch primer too thick the result isn't as good as the one
where it was barely more than a dust coat. Their etch is an
aerosol, quite smelly so do use a mask.
I am told that Tekaloid is even better, so I'll be giving that a
try when it's a fair bit warmer than now.

I did my BSA in mid Brunswick green boat and barge paint
(polyurethane based enamel) with a roller. Most of the bodywork
on that is wood. After primer and grain filler in the timber I
built up undercoats with a roller and flatted back wet between
every coat until the finish on the undercoats was acceptable and
not rubbing through to the previous coat. The top two coats went
on with just de-knibbing between them and cleaning with tack
cloth. The finish is acceptable. I tried a similar method on
fibreglass for the Auto Union with less success due to the
metallic nature of the top coat and a roller not being an even
enough coat to stop the metallic particles from sagging in the
gloss unevenly.
