Donor for parts
By: carl.kirk Date: November 27, 2024, 11:15 am

Hi, I was given this today as a potential parts donor.I don’t
even know what it is- some sort of home built buggy! It has 4
wheel independent suspension and hydraulic drum brakes. I was
thinking of ditching the engine and diff and modifying the back
end to sit lower with an approved engine and torque converter
driving a solid axle with single disc brake and mounted on a
plate that joins the two independent rear suspension arms. Also
cutting and lengthening the chassis as it is too short and
narrow for an adult. It seems a shame to scrap the front
suspension- someone clearly spent a lot of time building it.
What are the centres between the stud holes on a pit bike wheel
hub please as I am hopeful these 4 stud hubs might be an
industry standard?

I am wondering if this has history as a Formula 4 car. Before
attacking it can I suggest that you contact them, they have a
page Historic Formula 4 Racing. It would be a crying shame to
cut it for parts if it had history with them. There's just so
much there that I have bells ringing. They ran 250cc engines in
the first iterations.
I have posted a query on the FB page to see if it has any
history.

If you’re thinking of this for the Riley Imp, the front
suspension should be semi elliptic leaf springs I believe.
The rules say to use the same style of suspension as the
inspiration car.
I wonder if you might do better building from scratch rather
than modifying.

It is in France, but you could be right about racing heritage as
there is a track not far from here that has been in use since
the 1950’s. It is very small- once I am seated in it, my feet
are trapped either side of the steering column and it is
difficult to get out without loosing my shoes! The steering
wheel has a quick release mechanism. I will enquire before I set
to it with an angle grinder! As far as I can see, the only parts
I can re-use would be the steering, bushes and bearings, and
some of the steel. The front springs might be useful for a rear
suspension set up?

I have re-evaluated my original ideas to build an Riley imp and
then more recently a MPH- to be in proportion to the wheel size,
they need to be pretty long.
My current thinking is a David Gregson Austin 7 special( see
photo), so it would need a transverse front leaf spring for the
austin set up. My change of mind was because of the logistics of
transportation of the much longer Riley projects. With an Austin
7 special, I can just modify my existing trailer.

The historic Formula 4 folk are responding to the post, you
perhaps have a car known as a Pradeau!

I contacted my local race circuit but they haven’t come back to
me. Upon closer inspection today, the build is extremely poor.
What I thought was stiff front suspension turned out to be such
poor build quality that a cold chisel and club hammer were
needed to separate the front wishbones from the home made hub
carrier after the pivot bolt was removed. Even the steering
column that I wanted is made up of welded sections that were
welded by someone with their eyes shut! The 250cc Yamaha engine
has a hole in the bottom of the gearbox and the casing has been
butchered to accomodate the remote gearchange. I think the whole
thing is just scrap- glad it was free!

If It makes you feel better I paid £100 for a tidy non running
cart fitted with a Turkish Motor Bike engine yes I didn't even
know Turkey had a motor bike manufacturer.
The Axel was the wrong size and the sprocket carriers are
cracked, but I did manage to sell the engine for £60! and I can
use the front stub axels but I doubt I can use much else we just
have to see it as part of learning!

I have enjoyed stripping it down despite the lack of useful
parts. It has very unusual hub brakes. Basically a piston forces
the inner part of the pivoting hub ( which has a disc like
surface inside the hub) against the outer part of the hub (
again a disc like surface) , sandwiching a friction disc in
between. It is like a disc brake that has gone through a black
hole!

That is very much a production car part, not home made. Please
don't cut it up, I believe you have something significant in the
Formula 4 history.
