JCB engines
By: Ade Colmar Date: November 1, 2024, 5:27 am

I see that there is about to be yet another Honda GX200 clone.
This time marketed by JCB, and Gemini Karts will be stocking it.
It looks very smart in the corporate JCB colours! ;D The spec
indicates that it is 224cc, whereas the current CKGB cyclekart
guidelines allow an engine of up to 212cc (presumably influenced
by the popular Hyundai engines). Can this JCB engine be
considered as part of the family of generic 200cc single
cylinder engines? I guess this question might need CKGB
Committee input.

I do wonder if anyone has compared the Bore and stroke to see
what the actual Cubic Capacity is?
I have seen the JCB Engines but never seen one in then flesh or
used one, I suspect its just a generic one re badged

The JCB has a 70mm bore (as 212cc) but a 58mm stroke (3mm more)
= 223.2cc. They list it as 7.5bhp but the increase in torque
would be useful.

I would also be interested on if the JCB engine is/will be
considered to be within the rules?
Technically at 224cc it is currently outside the rules.
I have worked in automotive nearly all of my working life, both
OEM, Aftermarket and Industrial engines. Including JCB.
If Gemini Karts deem them worth stocking and I do know that JCB
is a name worth having and protecting. So they are not likley to
allow a "poor quality clone" to be branded JCB.
For sure they are "badged" and not made by them. They are
however a world wide operation with professional buying skills
and capabilities. The proof will be in the using, but tthey
would be a name I would buy on reputation alone. It does not
surprise me that a few cc s have crept in. As emmission
standards tighten etc. with performance effects, other brands
with new engine lines may follow suit.
You would have to see the power and torque curves to know if it
is producing a bit more anyway. (nominally 12cc / 212 cc = +5.5%
). Also the first thing we do is take the govenor off. Who
knows. If possible it would be good if it were adopted?
THe actual label says 6.7hp at 3600rpm.
So the 7.5hp is a generic title.
Regards
Richard

I was disappointed that Hyundai Engines seem to have
disappeared. So looking for an engine for my next cart I found
the JCB as has everyone else, I discounted it due to it being
224cc therefore not allowed. The problem is that where do you
end 250 cc or even bigger.
Cheers Nick

I dont know, it will be for the committee to say. The reality is
there is a 10hp max anyway.
It might be worth somebody researching why JCB have opted for
the few more CCs. As I uderstand it the engine is new to the
market and cannot be purchased until it's release. Shipping
after 10th December, earliest.
There will be a reason why it is 224cc. Either the applications
need that capacity to make the required power, or it must come
under a certain cc size to sell under whatever emissions it has
to meet. I think somebody needs to do a bit more digging on
this. I am very certain that it will have been launched as a
worldwide spec and somewhere in the world, will be why it is
what it is.

The comment re Hyundai is interesting I bought one well I tried
as every time I bought one it never arrived?. Loads advertised
from various suppliers but never any stock I did manage to get
one direct from Hyundai but it arrived badly damaged and was
very difficult to return. The JCB one I feel we need a bit more
info as it’s early days

If you search for JCB 224 on Fleecebay you will find them for
sale by a seller known as 'Hyundai Factory Outlet Store'
(although having just checked they have no more left) so whether
that is just coincidence or Hyundai are making the engines for
JCB is pure speculation.

The JCB engine doesn’t comply with the rules. We’ve just noticed
that Gemini are selling it under their cyclekart section and
we’ll be getting in contact with them.
As Nick says, the issue is where do you stop and at the moment,
the max CC is 212. This number came from the standard in the
US where the Predator engine is often used. 212cc is likely to
remain the limit.
Both the Hyundai and JCB engines are sold under licence here by
the same importer and the licences are different. We have had
lots of conversations with them. They’ve been selling both
brands for a while so it’s not about replacing one brand with
another. There’s a complicated backstory.
There are lots of engines within spec, so I’d suggest not
overthinking it. Buy a Loncin, Lifan, Briggs and Stratton,
Honda etc or even a no name. There’s loads for £90-150
