Left or right foot brake position?
By: Ade Colmar Date: October 29, 2024, 11:35 am

I'm sifting though many basic questions as I firm up the design
of my cyclekart and I keep coming back to this one. I hope my
question doesn't seem too daft, especially to the ex-kart
drivers. However, from my position of ignorance, there seems to
be more advantages to positioning the brake pedal for right foot
braking, than on the left. What do most cyclekart builders do?

From looking at the UK cyclekarts that have been built, most go
for a kart layout of left foot brake. Both of mine are right
foot brake/accelerator. Getting both pedals right of the
steering column may take some careful design to stop you hitting
both at once from experience

Never been in a Kart but went for left foot braking for me, not
much room in there for big boots. First time out was a bit
strange but feels natural now. Also consider how you can brace
your feet while not on the pedals, tight corners and bumpy
surfaces soon knock your feet and legs about.

Left foot brake and right foot throttle for me,
If you only have pedals on the right it must be difficult to
brake and use the throttle at the same time.

Right foot throttle and right hand hand brake, as per full-size
GN prototype.

Interesting, about 50/50 so far. I had wondered whether an
advantage of right foot braking is that your left foot can be
used to brace you in the kart. However, Mark's response has me
wondering if there is something about braking (briefly) while
you are still on the the power that beneficially affects the way
the torque converter works? These torque converters are a new
concept for me!

I am surprised an ex Karter has not mentioned it.
I don’t know the true answer however if you go to a kart race
centre where you hire the kart and track. ( eg works do). Double
foot operation is a Black Flag offence that if you are caught
more than once you are disqualified from the race. Basically I
think you are forcing the belt to slip, so will probably burn
out in short measure. Hence the renters making it a Black Flag.
If you own the kart and kit. I guess it is up to you. It is
not a clutch though that is designed to slip. At starts we all
used to 2 pedal a bit to get a better take off. Quite transient
though.
Hope this helps.
Brit bikes have always been left foot rear brake.
Probably try to get a drive in a CK. Next thing to do on my
list.

Left foot braking on both my CK's. For a slightly quicker
getaway I can hold the brake and give it a bit of gas at the
same time then dump the brake and floor it. When going round
corners i can stay on the gas and just tap the brake to unsettle
the rear and get it slide around like a drunk baby giraffe on
roller skates. The steering column is in the middle so there
wouldn't be enough room to have two pedals on one side.

That sounds like fun! I'm beginning to like the idea of a left
foot brake! :)

I'm surprised that anyone has ever considered right foot braking
I presumed everyone would go for left foot
