Honda GX200 Engines and the several different "editions&quo
t; from Honda
By: Richard Holland Date: October 5, 2024, 12:46 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I thought I would raise this thread, as I am new and
researching items at the moment for next year.
I dont want to go into the various clone equivalents etc. For
now to stay on the Honda produced ones.
I am finding that the internet, has some vaguaries in
information related to engines being sold (New)
GX200 seems to be a marketing "Generic Family Name", for a
number of engine varients.
I say this as, if you are going to buy an engine, possibly new,
you want the correct "spec".
Depending on the actual spec offered, prices as new vary, but
also so does the info that you seem to be able to get.
I believe, to take out the first layer of variations, I only
want to be looking at 3/4" inch straight keyed output shaft.
(Not tapered, not threaded etc)
I say 3/4 inch deliberately, as in the Honda OE info I am
finding, the 19.05mm output shaft is in the Imperial range.
The metric range only shows a dia 20mm keyed shaft.
The next "conundrum" seems to be letter/numbers after the GX200
(I am aware that Honda will have a specific OE code for each
engine "as sold".
However sellers seem to use a mixture/hybrid of a Honda code and
their own designations)
EG GX200 QH Seems from ESF Products to be 5.5hp
and lower priced that other 3/4 shaftt spec engines.
GX200 QXD, QX3 and QX4 Not 100% clear, depending where you
look power ranges between 5.8 and 6.5 Hp as stated.
Am I looking at previous evolutions of GX200 amongst the current
Honda product ? (QX4?)
I have then come across GX200 Karting. The stand out
difference is there is no petrol tank included.
I can understand this, as at Kart tracks they always have semi
transucent fuel tanks, so you can see the fuel level. I guess
bigger capacity also, so they can definitely do a full session
on a tank. Plus also probably a bigger filler cap, for easier
and safer filling. Not quite got my head around aparent pricing,
as they seem to be slightly cheaper????? But then a genuine
Honda steel tank as a spare is circa £100.
(As an aside, Honda sell OE now "Kart/small vehicle" engines.
All currently bigger cc than a GX200 but do have a bigger fuel
tank with a commercial size "cap" so can be filled from a petrol
pump)
Have I lost the plot here? Or do I need to go to my local Honda
engine dealer/ Kart Track to unravel this?
Maybe the answer is simple, but if I am going to spend a few
hundred pounds on an engine, I want to buy the right one from
the GoGet.
PS this is nothing to do with tuning and the range of
blueprinted and sealed Honda engines from Kart Race Companies.
CycleKarts for me are more about fun and enjoyment.
Any light you can throw on this is greatly apprecited.
I have Googled this and looked in the Forum. If I have missed
previous threads on this please just point me in the correct
direction.
Regards

For my Mini Bike Project I was a bit unsure of the cheap generic
engines quality ( I believe one has a plastic cam shaft!)
So I bought a Lifan as I have heard good things about them from
the Monkey Bike people.
This place is cheaper than Ebay

Having had it apart for governor removal etc it looks well made
no alarm bells.

Mark Underdown is the club member to consult on all things Honda
as he is a business user of Honda small engines and has done his
product development under Honda.
Yes the 3/4" 19.05mm shaft one is probably the best choice, not
only is the shaft smaller than the 20mm range, it is also longer
and that length gives better engagement to a TAV30 torque
convertor. Some machine down the 20mm shafts, and I have in the
past but I do not trust the engagement personally on the shorter
shaft.
As for power, the ones I can find at the moment seem all to be
the 6.5HP variant, I doubt initial power would be an issue, the
club allows tuning up to 10HP which, should you so choose, be
attainable on all those variants.
Most members here choose a Honda clone engine rather than the
real thing as they are unbelievably cheap.

Which would set you back little more than a genuine Honda petrol
tank, This means if you did go genuine Honda, many members here
would have a spare tank that they are not using that would fit
for little money. Win - Win
I am sure when Mark reads this thread he will add more relevant
information.

It is all a bit confusing but only because of all the miss
information on the web and all the engines vary depending on the
territory they are sold in.
You need to look at
HTML https://www.honda-engines-eu.com
For European engines, anything else is probably wrong. Most of
the suppliers list them incorrectly.
The part number I use is in the attached picture, (the top one
qx3)
I hope this helps,
