Steering box
By: Snakey Date: August 20, 2024, 4:01 pm

In common with many cars of the time, my 'inspiration' car has a
very conspicuous Pitman arm and draglink, from a steering box
located low down on the engine firewall. I would imagine that
someone, somewhere, will have reproduced this arrangement on a
kart but I've been unable to find an example. Car steering boxes
are way too big and heavy, and my newbie imagination can't come
up with a diy alternative. Help, anyone?

My kart has a steering box, I was lucky to find a gearbox from a
Mr Whippy machine for £11 on eBay.
The gearing is difficult to get right, the steering on my kart
is quite heavy!

You could have a drag link and drop arm that simply follow the
steering with actual steering being done via the tie rods.

On my cyclekart I use go kart style steering setup.

To keep the appearance of the inspiration car i made an
imitation steering box from bits of pipe with 3d printed parts.

Thanks all, especially for the pics (always welcome to Someone
Who Knows Nothing!). Guess Mark wins this one, although I'm a
little short of underworld contacts to mount a blag on the local
ice-cream van. Off to the scrappers now...
