ADVANCE NOTICE OF PROBABLE HANDBOOK REVIEW AND AMENDMENTS
By: Ian F Date: August 13, 2024, 3:16 am
---------------------------------------------------------
The Handbook provides a description of a CKGB Cyclekart.
This description is then used to obtain insurance cover for our
events, or to notify organisers of events what their insurance
needs to cover.
Currently, the committee have concerns regards whether all
cyclekarts are conforming with the Handbook.
Event regulations are issued for each event, which include
generic and specific requirements for that event. It has been
apparent that these regulations are possibly not being read, or
are being ignored. They are for the safety of everyone and also
minimise the event management if they are adhered to.
The number of entrants to an event are significantly increasing,
subsequently we need to police the above more rigorously.
At the VSCC event, we checked the track dimension and found one
cyclekart that significantly exceeded the required dimension.
That cyclekart now has a temporary concession to continue with
that dimension for the rest of the 2024 season, but it needs to
be corrected prior to the 2025 season.
There will be further compliance checks at future events. At
Newark the current plans are to check that everyone has an
acceptable fire extinguisher with them, and also that they have
a handbrake system.
The committee also has concerns with some driving standards and
these are now monitored and reported on at each event.
Incidents/accidents are bound to happen, but if cyclekarts or
drivers are exhibiting a continuing adverse trend then the
Clerks or other officials will be offering advice, cautions,
warnings, exclusions etc as may be required.
The committee also has concerns that some cyclekarts appear to
have exceeded the maximum 10hp rule in the Handbook.
Consequently, there has been a great deal of work behind the
scenes on how this will be managed. Consequently, the committee
are on the cusp of issuing further guidance on permissable
modifications. Subsequently, please have careful consideration
for any modification you may be carrying out, as it may not be
allowed by the proposed changes.

Sounds reasonable, other than saying rule 42, that about says
rule 42

Hi Ian, are layshafts still going to be allowed?

Hi Nick, there are no current plans regarding layshafts.
However, we are thinking about the use of Juggernaught clutches,
and the use of these may be related to the overall weight of
cyclekart and driver. We believe that they hold a lower gear
for longer and do not slip at high revs, which can be a problem
with heavier combinations. Consequently, they may be restricted
to the heavier combinations to try and level the playing field.

Ian, the advance notice is appreciated. I am an advocate of
keeping speed under control and have been since the club's
inception, as the committee is very well aware.
I was in conversation with Chris at Gemini yesterday, as I am
waiting for the next batch of Juggernauts to arrive. The only
reason I have one on order is in an attempt to keep up with the
committee members on track who have all fitted the same !! ;)
A subjective decision on weight seems a backward step ...
lightness of design and construction is a basic premise to be
encouraged. An application for dispensation based on medical
condition is an obvious exception and subject to committee
decision.
My suggestion on the Juggernaut would be to either ban or allow
now, with no grandfather rights, thereby avoiding any long-term
confusion.

I thoroughly recommend letting "the committee members" pull away
and lap you - I do*. I then briefly enjoy the glory of being at
the front again, marvel at their cyclekarts as we cut and thrust
for a few moments of duelling and then wave them off for another
lap, only to start it all again. I smile to myself, knowing
that I'm using less fuel than them.
* All except Jim, but he only has three wheels, bless him!

Three wheels seemed like a good idea at the time Stefan, you
know, less to maintain. The upside of it is I get to marvel at
the lovelyness of the tail end of some very well proportioned
cyclekarts, anyway Graham, as I recall you were second fastest
at Santa Pod, how much speed do you want? ;D

Apologies for the newbie question but what is a Juggernaut
clutch?
But as a bystander on Saturday it was blatantly clear to a man
with a white stick & a Labrador that not all engines in the
existing batch of cyclekarts are equal, I'm sure driver skills
do come into it but there were 4 or 5, shall we politely say
were somewhat quicker than others.

10hp is the limit in the handbook. Power is not the only thing
that is important in design of the cyclekart. How the power is
utilised is as or more important. If the gearing is wrong, the
power produced by the engine cannot be utilised efficiently, if
the chassis does not handle the power is irrelevant. Tuning an
engine for power at the top of the rev band might not be as
beneficial as tuning for low down torque to pull you out of the
corners. One of the quicker karts has incredibly low gearing,
perhaps 13:1? Which suits a short course with tight bends and
where the power band is in the tune of the engine. The
juggernaut drive unit for the torque converter has a more linear
response than the standard unit of the TAV which holds the
gearing in the power band more of the time -same power-utilised
more effectively. Lots of variables.
