I'm cheating! Frazer Nash (I think)
   DIR By: RhysN

As there are 2 weeks till Stretton as of today, and work got in
the way of getting the Napier done, I have acquired the basis of
a car which was constructed by one of the early people who got
in, and out of cyclekarts in the UK.
Graham Hill allowed me to take this project of reconstruction
over, so I have a lot less to do.
I have now to make a body and front end, although there is a
vague chance that I will use what I have for the short term as
the future has the front end getting an entirely new format,
going to 1/4 elliptics and a straight axle.
I guess I may as well do the body I'm thinking of, even if the
front suspension isn't quite what I envisage for the future..

After a fabulous day at Bicester Super Scramble, the decision is
made. This thing will be a Bugatti (as Fraser started) but
different in that it will be a Brescia, vague chance it will
make Stretton. (I'm now quadruple booked for that day!)

I had to look to see what a Brescia looked like. No compound
       curves .....a good thing?!
What do you use to bend the alloy?
I have acquired some 1.6mm thick ally, but has been bent, so
have panels 1m x 0.45m . 4 of them. The bonnet could be made in
       two halves, hinged or fixed.

When I can I bend alloy round whatever I can. This came with a
bend, which I then"unbent" and re-did round the power pole
outside my house. Several trips back and forth till it matched
the radiator bulkhead shape and at the other end the dashboard
       panel.
To be honest compounds are not too bad if they are not
excessive, the shrinker is a big help.
I also use my shrinker/stretcher, and bash bits over a shot bag.
I also fold between two bits of angle iron clamped to the bench
for some things, then form them with the shrinker into curved
       bits for frames.
I remembered something I was shown years back, and now do a bit
       of wired edges where needed.
The grade of alloy makes a huge difference as to how easy it is.
Learning to anneal alloy this year has been a game changer for
       me.
1.6 is hard work, unless it's a soft variety. The full size car
has that and forming the body for that has needed some muscle at
       times!

       Fail for Stretton July

I have got close, but no bananas.
Has anyone found the carton of enthusiasm I left somewhere and
can't find? Perhaps I chucked it out in a garage clean up.
It's a case of trying to do too many things again, and achieving
none of them. (3 project cars as well as this thing)
I finally got the front spindles/stub axles back yesterday, now
machined so that I can put bearings in the wheels. I need to
look in the bearing container to see if I have any.
Rear axle spacers were also done. they will hopefully partially
sort out the mismatch between the hubs (1") and the axle (25
mm). They go on the outer end to support the wheel, either it
will need new hubs or perhaps another sneaky fix/bodge on the
inboard side which will be only temporary.
I completely stuffed up the dashboard bulkhead/scuttle support,
and now I have none of the free plywood to do another.
The front part of the body is ready to be fastened down. I'm
using the top which Fraser made totally reshaped, and the sides
are Dibond or whatever local trade name. The material is thin
alloy skins over a form of plastic core used in the sign writing
industry and more importantly free. It's an absolute bitch to
shape the slight compound where it meets the radiator shell.
The rear, engine cover etc hasn't been started, reality I
haven't even come up with a way in my mind as to how I think it
could be done, or even what it should look like, there are
varieties of Brescia back ends, some more shielding of engine
heat than others. Of course the one I like best is the one that
shields the most, ie the bolster tank version.
Anyway, this is what it looks like 7am today.

In case folks don't know, here is a lovely period pic of a
       Brescia.

I think the carton of enthusiasm will be found at Streeton
       tomorrow.
We have all hit that, 'I don't know how to do', 'I can't see a
way to do it', 'hell not certain I want to do this anymore'
moments, usually while nursing a sore thumb, or dripping blood!
       Or my personal fav,
the part you have just spent hours and hours fettling, that
thing you just made falls to pieces or you just trim one final
       bit off...too many.
Re the engine cover, could you go with creating the silhouette
of the shape from the side view, but leaves the engine plenty of
       ventilation?
       Just a thought.

Engine cover idea isn't a bad one, the a dummy top cover when on
display, or events where they need to look correct. I like that.
I have seen other Brescia photos with a tail similar to what Kim
has, and I know hot to do that. Perhaps one of each!

I have spent the afternoon mainly on the Brescia, apart from
making some jigs/fixtures to weld the front spring horns for the
       Napier.
I now have front spindles that carry 17 mm bearings, a totally
rebuilt front axle and odd other bits.
I decided to revise the steering column, as I didn't like the
solid steering shaft and iron housing self aligning bearings. I
now have a tube shaft and the bearings are graphite impregnated
UHMWPE. The saving in this part alone has trimmed 3.7 kg from
the car. It's also a whole lot cheaper for a new build, and
having used the system extensively in my other cars I know it's
       more than adequate.
The side panels are all done, I have used what the Americans
call Dibond. 2 skins of alloy sheet over a plastic centre
commonly used in the sign industry. It's not light, but is self
supporting, so framing is saved. (It was free too :) )
I have now decided to lower the floor, as it was effectively on
top of the frame rails (300 mm from the ground) It will now go
under the frame, at least in the seat area and as far forward as
the scuttle. taking it out was the last task before coming in.
So, current position is that as soon as the front axle is welded
it's drivable. Sept 2nd is now doable.
