       Differential

I broke the bank and spent just a bit under £18 on an Aliexpress
differential. It's a surprisingly nicely made bit of kit and
with the gear removed and replaced with an aluminium case
carrying the sprocket and disk it looks like a good base for a
cheap cyclekart axle. I will clean the grease off and measure
it up and put the dimensions here if anyone is interested.
I may not use this on my first build as I'm trying to keep
things simple and keep the workload down. It will be a nice
project to tinker with when I fancy doing a bit of turning.

I’ve used that diff in my Austin 7 Twin Cam. It’s not as robust
as the Peerless but should do the job. Time will tell !

Yes its steel on steel bearings but they only move when
cornering I suppose. How did you solve the spline problem, weld
       the half shafts in?

Yes, I welded 16mm stub shafts into the gears. Then the drive
shafts are 25mm o/d x 19mm i/d with collars to drop down to
16mm. The drive shafts each have 2 bearing blocks so the diff
is just floating in the middle. My only concern is to do with
the loads generated by the chain drive because the sprocket is
attached to the diff. I may retrofit some bearing bushes into
       the diff.

I was looking at my similar diff today and the stub shafts for
my 18tooth splined gear would be 17mm, I know these come in 16
and 18 so I would presume your one was a 16t Glynn, I was
planning on lathing a bit of bright bar to fit into the gears
one end and a hollow 30mm kart axle with keyway full length the
other end and welding it up, attaching the sprocket to the diff
and using the 30mm diff section each side as the bearing mounts
inboard thus holding the diff and preventing flutter. Brakes
would then have to be on both stub axles. All this is a job for
when I finish the Auto Union

......... My only concern is to do with the loads generated by
the chain drive because the sprocket is attached to the diff
..... I was thinking of fitting a case turned from aluminium to
carry the sprocket and a pair of bearings for the half shafts,
which I think is how the Peerless diff works. There is a
YouTube channel called Doug's Shed and he has been making chain
drive diffs from Mazda MX5 internals in an aluminium case for
about 20 years. Too heavy for cyclecars but scaled down using
these cheep tricycle diffs might be good.

hi thamsmud, could you advise which diff you ordered on ali
express or the title to search for it. thanks
