Fibre Glass Suppliers
By: Max Venturi Date: January 9, 2024, 2:52 pm

Does anyone know where I can get hold of the type of resin and
hardener the professionals use? I was given some a few years
ago, it had a blue tint and went off very quickly even in cold
weather, unlike the usual stuff from the DIY shops.
Thanks in advance

Have a look at the vendors list. I got mine from MB Fiberglass
but I don't think they have an outlet in England.

Would this be the best stuff to use for body panels?

Can't see why it wouldn't be ok for making body panels .
I just used Polyester resin to make my grill, epoxy resin is
also an option but more expensive.
Chopped mat can be used or fiberglass cloth, the cloth will give
a nicer finish to the inside of your panels.

The blue resin mentioned is just polyester, when the catalyst
(MEKP) also what some people call hardener is added the resin
should turn green tint, then as it is curing goes brown tint. I
use East Coast Fibreglass for all my supplies, have done for
seven years and they are always good and helpful. FWIW I was
fibreglassing as a job for about 15 years and hobby either side
of that. If I can be of help, just ask.

There is a range og cloth on the EC website - which is the most
economical to give a reasonably smooth finish?

Max, to answer that I need to ask questions. Are you making a
mould to have a smooth finish and then make a part. Other option
what are you using as a shape to 'glass over?

The explanantion would be easier with a photo or two but that
will have to wait until the weekend when I've finished making
the frame for the engine cover.
Basically what I'm thinking about doing is covering the frame
with EML to give the basic shape and then layover the normal
matting and resin. That stuff leaves a rough finish which I'd
sand back to smooth out and correct any dips or troughs with
filler. Then to finish I was thinking about laying over the
smooth mat and sanding that back before painting.
Probably completely the wrong way to do it but anyway, that's
what I'm thinking of.

There is no "wrong" way. Your idea sounds reasonable., are you
intending to leave the mesh in place? If so, then this is the
ONLY time I would suggest prewetting your pieces of CSM before
laying them on the mesh. Any other time it just makes things
heavier than they should be. I would put one layer of 300gm CSM
and let it harden, then sort othe hollows etc, then another
layer, and finish with a woven light cloth. That's just what I
would do, doesn't mean that there aren't other ways that work. I
would leave a vent are of the shape in the top to let engine
heat out through your mesh too.
