Just starting out

So, I'm new to all this
Taking the advice to keep the first one simple, I've sketched
out my intentions in CAD to check fit and feasibility.
This is going to be an electric build, lower rear panel is
(hopefully) going to duct some air past the motor and controller
and out the 3 holes in the rear panel.
Rear top will be removable to tend to batteries and electronics.
Pics attached, positive comments welcome..........

Where are you going to put the battery?
How about at the front for better weight distribution?

With the current that will be drawn, the leads need to be as
short as possible to limit power losses through heating. Using
Li-ion batteries the whole setup will be lighter than a GX200
and with fuel and TAV.

My initial thoughts were 4 batteries (conventional sealed) so
maybe 2 near the front axle, 2 at the rear. But further
investigation on the comments from @ChrisBrown have led me to
discard the idea because of the long power lines needed. So I'm
going for a single 48v 52Ah LiPo pack and a 2kw 48v brushed
motor. The brushless stuff seems OK but the control is harder to
get my head around. A basic setup will do just fine for the
first attempt. So I think I have all the info I need, I'm going
for a Gemini front axle setup, pitbike wheels, pre-built kart
axle (TBD),frame rails external to the body. Front leaf springs
are the only remaining headache.

Hi AGP72, Mark Underdown makes very good leaf springs
specifically designed for Cyclekarts.
Try contacting him on this forum for availability. Good luck
with your project.
Cheers Nick

Firstly, good luck with the build. What’s your inspiration car?
I would be tempted to put the batteries towards the front and
nice and low. It’ll help with weight distribution and front end
grip. The power cables won’t be too long so for a 2m 16mm2
cable you’ll lose about a tenth of a volt and 6W at full load.
So you could probably go with a smaller cable.
What battery are you thinking of using? Check the current that
your battery can deliver. A 48V 58Ah battery that can safely
deliver 2kw + margin was very expensive when I was looking into
this option. A much cheaper way might be to start with lead
acid and then upgrade when it’s working. You have more internal
losses in the battery, but should get you driving ok.
