Austin 7 special build in Dorset
By: dorsetrob Date: November 22, 2023, 2:49 pm

I'm building an Austin 7 special inspired by Miss BACFire
HTML https://anarchadia.blogspot.com/2014/06/vintage-thing-no137-miss-bacfire.html
and Nick Allens Shelsley special.
HTML http://www.zipp.co.uk/gallery/Wiscombe-Park-2010-07-25/158+5974.jpg.html?g2_GALLERYSID=ce6399da87610622321fb044e321c592#scroll
I've been collecting bits of steel and stuff for a while, and
have finally got to a point where it looks like something.
The chassis is 75x25mm ERW.
I've got a mixture of ebay c90 wheels and the plan is to use an
old Lynch LEM170 126 24v 4kw motor, and some home-made LiON
battery packs.
This evening I've drilled and welded up the spring hangers on
the front beam, and now have a bit of grinding and filing to do
now.
The aim is to finish over the winter and try and join in some
events.
It'd be nice to join the folks at the Shuttleworth event next
year, as I was a student there back in the
1980s.[attach=1][attach=2][attach=3][attach=4][attach=5][attach=

Good start & interesting inspiration car. It’s nice to see
another Kart in the south especially in Dorset, good luck with
the project.
Cheers Nick

cheers Nick,
where are you in Dorset? - I'm in Wareham.
Is the Westzoyland event an annual affair?

Hi Rob I’m in Ferndown. I hope Westonzoyland will be an annual
event, this year was the 1st time. We do have test & tune days
they’re well worth coming to.
Cheers Nick

This weekend I managed to do a few jobs on the cyclekart.
I fitted the tyres on the front wheels, (c90)
offered up the rear wheels (pitbike wheels)
tested the sprung chassis by jumping on the chassis- it works -
the springs are trailer springs cut down to a single spring, cut
in half and then cut down the centre line to thin them to 25mm
wide.
Since the pics I've also welded up a steering shaft box, painted
the chassis with some old black hammerite, and ordered a rear
45Tooth sprocket.
Offering up the Lynch motor It's too big to fit to the right of
the seat which was the plan, so It's possibly going directly
behind the seat...
Anyway 10T on the motor and 45T on the axle should give about
45mph...
I'm wary as this Lynch is 1 LEM170-126 which runs at 24volts...
and to get 4.8w needs a couple of hundred amps.. and can in
theory cope with 400 which gives 9.6kw or thereabouts...
But would also require a bunch of battery power.
I've run the lynch as an outboard motor recently and blown
through a bunch of Lipo batteries in minutes... On a bigger boat
I could use some weighty Lead acid, but a cyclekart needs less
weight... and I need less cost....
I also fired up the forge to melt down some old aluminium to
cast the front grille... I melted down an old engine and cast
into ingots... I've made a good mould for the front, but I need
to make some greensand, as the petrabond I used is a bit
burnt...

Looks promising, I like the radiator. I will be interested in
seeing how you fit the brake caliper

That's looking great. I know they're not cheap, but a used EV
battery module might be good.
HTML https://www.evbreakers.com/product-page/catl-battery-module-1p6s-2-47kwh-21-9v-110ah,<br
/>should be good for 30mins flat out at 4.8kW and not that much
more than a couple of decent size lead acid batteries.

I've been looking at various EV cell combinations on ebay, not
come across NCM before.
and that CATL cell looks to be the right price.
very tempting.
I've been thinking about the brakes too, and I'm not sure how
much it will need them,
that motor is a bit of a pig, and is going to scrub speed when
it isn't powered, or shred teeth off the drive.
Picked up some more welding wire from screwfix today, so can
finish the front end...
more pics as and when.

Just ordered a salvaged 2022 peugeot 208 ev cell, 2p6s 2.7KWh
21v...
should be fine, also only 12kg.
If it doesn't work on the cyclekart it'll be a useful solar
bank.
Sadly this weekend I have to fix a leak in the roof/ the shower
/the Ford KA... so not much more progress.
