Painting...brush or spray? What to do?
By: uncantim Date: October 30, 2023, 1:08 pm

Evening all
I've never considered this before but I'm now at the point where
I'm soon going to have to make a decision.
Am I going to paint my Cyclekart with a brush/roller or spray
paint?
What have you guys done? What are the considerations? What
should I be aware of?
All your advice and guidance on this subject is
appreciated...let me know your thoughts.
Thank you Team
Tim

I hate painting Tim, it is not my natural forte. The secret is
in the prep, prime, undercoat, sand wet, undercoat, sand wet,
undercoat, sand wet, .... If you don't go through to primer, top
coat with barge paint and roller, sand wet top coat with barge
paint and roller. Was my method. I sprayed the boot lid as it is
perforated and I must say the rollered finish was better

Hi Tim, my kart is all plywood. I used Zinnser Bullseye 123
primer/undercoat, several coats applied with short pile mini
roller, Screwfix code 5389X. Hand sand with 180 grit 240 grit,
hoover up all dust then clean with a tack cloth. Top coat
Zinnser all coat gloss & matt applied with HVLP Sprayer.
Hope this helps
Cheers Nick

Brilliant fellas, thank you.
Interesting that you both went with a roller, I suppose that
makes it easier and more controllable.

Hi, I brush painted my ply body sides using , wood primer and
water based paint ; Three years ago .
Most cars of our Inspiration era , were brushed. Don't worry too
much about the finish . It's Patina LOL

Interesting to see the responses from the experienced builders.
I was planning on using a roller on mine so it's reassuring to
know it works.
I was thinking about using water a based exterior gloss paint.
In my experience the water based paints don't dry to a high
gloss like the solvent based paints so I'm hoping for a more
"period" finish. Has anyone else used water based paint? Like
this....

I'm planning on starting with a red oxide primer followed by a
matt black base and finish with the red.

Hi Max, the Zinnser products mentioned in my reply are all water
based. If you must use Dulux go for water based Weathershield
gloss. I would stick with the Zinnser .
This is what I do for a living unfortunately.
Cheers Nick

Thanks Nick. Solvent based Dulux Weathershield has been my
preferred choice for over two decades now for exterior use and
I've found it outlasts the cheaper supermarket paints by a long
way. As you know it's all down to the prep. I've used the Dulux
water-based satin paints indoors and know they go on really well
with a roller and produce a very nice smooth finish. I've never
used Zinser so if you think it goes on well with a roller I'll
give it a try. My local old school DIY shop sells Zinser so I'll
pop in and see what colours he stocks. I'll need bright red.
My soffits and facias need painting, shame you're so far away
:(

Wow...this just shows how powerful and useful this forum is!
I have used spray paint in cans so far for parts like chassis,
axles and fittings, complete with a clear top coat. I was going
to use the same for the body but something Jim Rawnsley said at
the Northern Builders meeting made me question this. I
appreciate our inspiration cars were mostly painted with brushes
and it's interesting to note that some of the experienced
Cyclekart builders on here have gone down a similar brush/roller
option, so I'm going to use your advice and go that route
instead.
Max, I used a gloss roller and the white gloss Dulux
Weathershield on my daughter's Toylander, it looks amazing when
it's first painted but doesn't last. It damages easily and goes
a creamy yellow colour if you leave it in a dark garage or shed
for too long.
Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question, you're
all rock stars!
Tim
