Morris Eight Series II special, "La La Baby"

       Right,
The Kart I am going to make is inspired by my dads old Morris
Eight. He rebuilt it from a rusty old chassis that he bought
from a farmer, the chassis was only visible as a long patch of
grass in the field by the farm house. He built it up as a 3
seater boat tail and took it to lots of shows, Shelsley Walsh
and Prescott were our favourites. It won the Morris register
       presidents choice once at Himley.
       The Kart,
It will be made using the 3"x1" steel method, it will have front
and rear leaf springs with the engine forward of the rear axle.
I went and purchased the remains of an old Eccles trailer today
to salvage the leaf springs and shackles (£25) not sure if they
are going to be any good but its a start.
Pictured is "La La Baby" and the springs.

I like old Morris cars, your farthers is a very nice example. My
next build is based on the pre war Morris Minor.
I wouldn't worry too much about rear springs, everyone just
runs a solid axle, no suspension. There is no advantage with
the rear springs, It just adds weight and more complexity to
       the build.
If you find the springs are too stiff just run one leaf. I found
my trailer springs were still too stiff, so I split them length
wise which helped quite a lot.

Hi Mike I agree with Moogie, rear suspension and chain drive
       difficult to get right.
       Good luck with your build.

       Cheers Nick

       thankyou for the replies,
I think it may be possible to use rear springs and keep things
fairly simple, ways to solve this could be to mount the engine
on a spring loaded sliding plate which is pushed forwards by
longitudally mounted coil springs when the axle springs are
compressed thereby keeping the chain tension, using spring
loaded tensioner wheels on the chain to keep it tight and
another thought would be to use 2 or 3 V belts or a heavy duty
ribbed drive belt (like a modern cam belt for instance) instead
       of a chain.
What do you think? are there any existing setups that solve the
       rear leaf spring issues?

Hi Mike, I use rear leaf springs and they are very easy to put
in and set up. Have a look at my build thread Dodge Baquet. They
improve handling especially out of corners and help to stop your
back getting jarred over bumps. They also look cool and more
period. Once you have driven a CK with rear suspension you'll
not want to revert back to a solid mounted axle.

Cheers, I looked at your thread, beautiful work. I'm surprised
to see no tensioner and the drive sprocket almost directly over
the axle sprocket. does the chain ever come off?

I do use sprung tensioners on the chain from the engine to the
lay shaft and the chain from the layshaft to the diff. I've
never had the chain come off and I'm surprised about that and I
use 08B chain which is a bit rubbish.

I have dropped chains a couple of times, but the reason is me. I
had not locked the axle well enough to stop it moving sideways.
I now suggest split collars and quite a few, or pieces of tube
between components and over the axle.
