       Chain Tensioner?
By: Max Venturi Date: August 27, 2023, 5:50 pm

I'm having a lot of problems setting the chain tension. has
anyone fitted a chain tensioner and if so how?
       Thanks in advance.

       Hey Max.
The majority of CycleKarts seem to tension the chain by moving
the engine back and forth on the mounts. Some use a hinged mount
for the engine with bolts to jack the front or rear of the
engine to achieve tension. Some even just pack the engine up on
washers to get the spacing correct.
If you are going to put a tensioner on the chain line itself,
then most tensioners are designed for the "slack" (return) side
of the chain. If you are putting one on the drive (In tension)
side of the chain it needs to be a lot stronger and wear is
       increased.
If you look on Ebay, there are many designed for pit bikes, it
is just a case of getting a mounting point.

Looking at your build journal Max, I found this photo...

You seem to have tensioners on the engine mount already? Are
       these not enough?

Hi Max, i fitted an as yet untested chain tensioner yesterday,
quite a simple affair but seems to work. Look at my last build
       journal entry for pictures.
       Good luck Nick

Firstly I'd like to say this is my first post and was looking to
say hello in the relevant section but I'm doing something wrong
somewhere as I cant find it.
Looking at this post for chain tensioner, I'm wondering is a
chain tensioner a good move? seems a little complicated, maybe
just move the components apart? As sprockets and chains wear I
have found the tensioner can't cope and the chain slips over the
       sprockets under load. Just wondering.

Thanks Nick - simple and no doubt effective.
I have raised the motor using a spacer plate and rubber isolator
blocks and have finally got a reasonable tension on the chain.
       I'll post a photo tomorrow.
If that solution doesn't work I'll copy your solution.

Here's the engine mounted on isolation blocks. The chain tension
is good and the engine is positioned where I want it but the
blocks aren't really stiff enough. What I need is a metalastic
       isolator plate.

Hi Max, does the chain jump off if you remove rubber blocks &
       replace with more rigid spacer?
Just a thought but one American builder swears by an engine
mounting plate made from 2 18 mm plywood sheets bonded together.
Can you tension your chain by moving engine backwards on slots?
       Best of luck Nick
