       Alfa Romeo P2
By: Max Venturi Date: July 4, 2023, 12:04 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I've taken over Clive & Gary's 'kart. It started out as Mike
Hawthorn's Riley Elf* then became the MG PA you can see in the
       first photo.
One of the things I'd like to change over the winter is the way
the engine and exhaust hang off the back well beyond the rear
cross-member. I've been giving some thought to how I could
modify the engine mount to bring the motor forward and up. The
second photo shows a mock-up of a modified engine mounting
plate. This lifts the engine and moves it forward enough to
bring the top of the rocker cover just inside a vertical line
from the rear cross-member and retains the existing chain
tensioning system (also keeps the chain from fouling the
transmission mounting plate). I'll also give some thought to
vertical chain adjustment (thanks Stefan). Although raising the
engine in this will raise the c.o.g slightly it will also move
the weight of the engine forward. I may lower the floor slightly
as well to compensate for the slightly higher engine.
If the plan works I can keep everything inboard of the rear
cross-member. To do this though I'll need to modify the route
the exhaust pipe takes, relocate the silencer and find a way of
       repositioning the air filter.
All this should allow me to shorten the tail significantly and
make the 'kart a more convenient fit on the trailer.
I've been promised the loan of a van for the Sywell weekend so
hopefully I'll be giving the 'kart a good shake-down there and
I'll welcome any comments and suggestions from the experienced
builders on this Forum who may be attending.
In the meantime I'd welcome suggestions on my plan to reposition
the engine and how to re-plumb the exhaust. Are aftermarket
silencers available off the shelf? I have very limited welding
skills so clamp up pipe options would be preferred.
       Thanks in advance.
       Joe

I'm currently experimenting with re-positioning the engine and
I've found the CL of the engine is not mounted on the CL of the
chassis. It's about 20mm off to the right.
See photo - the blue mark is on the CL of the chassis.
Is this unusual? Has it been done to line the drive sprocket up
with the axle sprocket the position of which is determined by
       the key-way on the shaft.
I'd rather not change it if I don't have to but advice would be
       appreciated.

Moving the engine forward is going to be relatively straight
       forward.
Photo 1 shows the existing position with a significant overhang
beyond the back of the chassis.
Photo 2 shows how 2 lengths of 'C' section can be used to
       reposition the engine forward.
Photo 3 shows the revised position with no part of the engine
overhanging the back of the chassis.
Photo 4 shows the existing chain adjuster which is retained and
       works as originally intended.
All I need now is some more 'C' section to make two "production"
mounting rails and a new chain. Mine is 2 links too short :'(
This means that when I make the new body I can shorten the
overall length of the car by about 18".

I wouldn't worry about it, 20mm is nothing. It's more important
to focus on having clearance on each side to fit under your
       tail.

With the minimal weight of the engine package I have never
considered the lateral position of it. Fitting the whole lot in
may mean it just goes where it needs to. Don't overthink
       problems that don't exist :).

Engine now back in on its new mountings. No more overhang and
plenty of scope for redesigning the rear end to make it more
       compact.

       MG PA Re-build
By: Max Venturi Date: July 28, 2023, 5:00 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
A dry day at last so managed to assemble the frame for the new
cockpit. There's still a bit more framing to add to get the
shape of the sides correct but at least the main frame is done
       and primed.
If any new members are wondering what sort of body they want to
build why not take a short cut and have my MG body? It will be
       available in the autumn.[attachimg=2][attachimg=1]

Pedal box sorted out. A bit more fettling and finishing required
       but the layout is sorted.
