       ALS II

Should EMT's be trained to do ALS assist...such as setting IV's,
getting the drug bag out, getting the monitor ready? Or is that
       the paramedics job?

I think it would be a good idea-we have been asked to ride in
with local ambulance to assist when we have a critical
situation. We know where drug bag is as well as IV set up. We
just set equipment out and paramedic/advanced actually
administer. When only 2 people on the rig-and one is driving,
not enough hands or sometimes not enough time to wait for
       additional ambulance personal.

I agree. Knowing how to assist the paramedic can be especially
helpful when the patient is in critical condition and time is of
       the essence.

Absolutely the basic should be able to assist in ALS set up.
This allows the paramedic to perform his job easier. However
there has to be the understanding that the paramedic needs to
check and confirm proper actions of the basic.

I have to agree with Mike on this because if something is done
wrong its the paramedic ass on the line

The training of an EMT to assist an advanced provider is vital
to a positive outcome for the patient. By having an EMT assist
and prepare equipment it allows for very quick and effective
care, and it allows the advanced povider to focus on the task of
       patient care and evaluation.
Additionally, with the way most agencies staff it is necessary.
It is rare to find an EMS unit with two or three advanced
       providers on one unit.

Yes I think EMTs should be trained because it helps the ALS
provider tremendously because they can focus on patient and not
have to worry about the prep work. Thus quicker and more
effective transport as long as als checks everything over before
utilizing it because its ALS signature on the chart but then
again if EMTs are trained to do this stuff then it now becomes
our responsibility too so if we make a mistake we then should be
held liable because we are supposed to know how to do it.
However all the ALS I ride with I doubt any one of them wouldn't
check it over for themselves to make sure all they really have
to do it look not too hard or time consuming.

I think it would be a valuable assett to assist a paramedic with
equipment set up. It would free up time for the paramedic to
       focus more on patient care.
