No, there should be discretion used by dispatcher on when to
send a paramedic. For example if the call is for a 4 year old
who fell complaining of a skinned knee there is no reason a
basic should not be able to handle it. If the call is for a 4
year old who was struck by a vehicle at high speed then yes a
paramedic should be sent.

No! Unless there a need after you have done your assessment on
the patient.

I agree - ALS may not always be necessary. Whether or not ALS
should be called should be determined on a case by case basis.

myself being a parent yes I would want a paramedic responding.
secondly as someone with a little ems background we know
dispatchers dont always get all the facts correct, I would
always err on the side of caution.

Nature of the emergency should be the basis of need. Should the
illness or injury be classified such that the training and skill
level of a paramedic would prove benificial for the treatment of
the child then the paramedic response is necessary.
If the nature of the injury or illness be classified as a basic
level of support than there would be no need for paramedic level
response.

I have to agree with most of you. The call for ALS should be
determined by the nature of the call or how the patient, child
or adult, is presenting. In regards to children, we are aware
that they can decompenstate quickly, but it should be a
judgement call of the EMT as to wether those resources are
needed.

I'd have to say no that ALS isn't always needed but I would make
sure they are en-route till deemed unnecessary because the
dispatcher and or circumstances may not always be right on the
first glance thus don't wast time getting there and then find
out you need als they can always be cancelled. Me I'm fortunate
that where i ride there is always als on board and the rescue
most of the time has one of our als providers.

No I don,t think always necessary either. That is where we have
to depend on dispatch getting as much info as possible.
Hopefully they can determine the correct priority. Also when it
reaches the intended agencies-we can make the judgement as to
whether there is a remote possibility that paramedic response
might be in the best interest even if not in the priority. A-E
is more helpful with that and the codes now. Priority 1 and 2
did not offer as much information. Just have to start being
more familar with them
