I know of one situation we wanted to use a helicopter due to
extrication time but after we called and time went by they had
not even took off by the time the patient was out. I don't know
why this was or if things went a lot faster then we thought but
by the time they would have gotten there we were at a hospital.

I think in remote rural areas it is a great asset, however in
this urban area with 2 hospital within minutes i don't believe
it would be warranted.

I've never had any first-hand experience with air transport, but
I'd have to agree that there are some cases where it is
warranted and others where it is not. Some possible examples of
the former include when in rural areas, when there is a need to
go to a specialized treatment center that is further away, and
possibly when there is a mass casualty incident.

Courtesy of a flight nurse/Paramedic that we all miss dearly at
COCVAC :-) it usually takes about 10-15 minutes to load a
patient into a helicopter on a scene and its about 30 minutes
for an inter facility transport.
The difference between a hot load and a cold load is whether the
engine is on or off. Its preferred to load a patient cold
(without the engine on) because its safer but occasionally you
probably will do a hot load when time is pressing.

I think in a rural setting where transport or extraction would
be drawn out it is benefical. Or in a case of trauma with
exstended extracation and where transport to a specialized
medical center would be benefical. I have never been involved
with a transport of a patient from a scene. But I have been at
St E's for pt transfer by Air. It does take a while to land and
take off. And it seems to take a long time for the crew to get
the pt situated and secured for transport. Even with some
serious tauma calls in the Utica Area the transport to St.E's
would be quicker than a flight.

I think air transports have their place: They work well in a
rural situation and also from one hospital to another

Where I am located it is generally easier to just load and go. I
know some instances it is a definite option like prolonged
extrication. I have not had any experience with air transport
the one time we did want them we called immediately when
arriving on scene and doing a size up and by the time the pt was
extricated I called for a status and they were just lifting off
and I could be at a trauma center before they got there.

hot load, cold load? i think the idea of meeting in route is
creative but possibly more time consuming ?!

Air transport is a great resource if needed. I could see it
used for remote locations like snowmobile trail or hunting
accidents were there are no roads for safe transport out of
locations.

i think that air transport is a great option. but not always
the best way of transporting the pt. If you are in the outlining
areas it might be a good option. But locally they get the pt
quickly to the hospital.
