It is a very valuable tool if circumstances are right. Often
the time factor is to long- ground transport is more expetiant.
If there is an extended extracation or time for arrival into
scene, then the use would be beneficial as the transort time
would be an advantage. Also, the weather has great bearing on
ability to fly. Again, valuable time lost while this is being
determined.

I agree, ground is much more expediant. The only benifit I see
to useing flight is that you can travel a much greater distance
much faster. Other than that I would perfer ground transport.
If I had a patient that was in critical care I would not wait
for flight. I would load my patient and have the helicopter
meet the ambulance in route.

Air transport in the right situation is invaluable. Downfall is
a lot of stipulations on when they can fly. In my situation the
only interaction I will probably have with a helicopter is air
transport from the hospital not from the scene due to close
location to two hospitals.

i think in a rural setting its a valuable resourse but for us
in the city it just wont work

for certain situations its a great tool,but for us working in
close proximity to two hospitals it is not something i would
often consider. however there may come a time where utilizing a
helicopter could come into play. such as when you have multiple
critical patients. over exausting the local trauma center might
influence your decision in making the call for the helicopter...

Air transport is a valuable resource for a rural setting to get
critical patients to advanced care. It is unrealistic for an
urban setting where a hospital is 5 to 12 minutes away.
Another important aspect and consideration for air transport
would be availability and flight time. Even in a rural setting,
the drive time to a hospital may be quicker than waiting for the
arrival of a helicopter.

Do any of you know how long it takes to transfer the patient
from the ambulance to the helicopter? There are 2 types of
loads: a hot load and a cold load..

We use air transport in Camden and Florence quite regularly.
That is if the bird is avaliable and the weather permits same.
Many times our trauma cases require transport to Syracuse from
the back woods. A helicopter can be here in Camden and landed
by the time we get the patient to the landing zone. This cuts
our transport time on good days from 40 - 45 mintues to 18.
Many times we will even meet them on RT 69 on the way again to
cut down on time. Great tool.

Air transport is great for long distances but for me working so
close to 2 hospitals it doesn't make sense most of the time,
maybe for hospital to hospital flights.
However, it does come into play with long extrications but don't
be like us and once the helicopter lands find out our patient is
too heavy for them to take. lol
There are concerns too of limited flight time due to
restrictions like weather. Also that once deemed needed, it can
take a while for the helicopter to get there. So there are pros
and cons but all in all if the circumstances are right its very
useful.
