Under 18 he cannot be signed off without parent or legal
guardian.
Great point for no patient found I guess I would also check to
see where the vehicle was damaged

well I kinda agree with lisa doing a no pt. found. If there are
no injuries then it's just property damage then why cant we no
pt. found and turn it over to the PD?

I agree with Lisa but rember if you make any contact with the
person involved he or she is now your patient.

no he has to be 18, you must contact parent or guardian unless
he is an emancipated minor

You all have it correct the patient is a minor and as such can
not make an informed decision regarding refusal of care.
We have all had these calls..old enough drive, have children and
sign up for the armed forces yet can not legally refuse medical
care in the field..but those are the rules we work by..
I understand Lisa's concept of no patient found based on the
fact that a patient generally has some type of medical or truama
issue for us to be there. However, when we are called it is for
a patient regardless if there is a problem or not..and we must
treat the person as such. In order to determine there are no
injuries you must do an assessment therefore you have created
the duty to act.
I believe the best way to handle this situation: Medical
Control! Those who mentioned it get an A+ from me! We are
designated agents of the Medical Director and it is our
responsiblity to act within the guidelines of our protocols..try
to contact the parents, contact PD if they are not on the scene
and contact medical control and let the MD on duty make the
determination to allow the minor to refuse care and or
transport.

If you cannot contact the parents for sign off purposes I think
you should notify medical control. You can't just walk away,
that's abandonment, don't think you turn the patient over to a
non medical provider either.
Consult medical control.

No you need to contact either medical control or see if a parent
can come to the scene.

No he can not sign himself off. But that is a good point someone
brought up about no pt being found. It may work. Can a police
officer stand in as a legal gardian if parents are contacted. A
good example would be a student traveling away from home or
college not yet being 18 yr old.

I'd like to add that if the patient was legally emancipated, i
believe he would be able to sign off. Would he have to have
documentation on him or could PD some how find these records on
file??
