another increasingly popular problem facing EMS is calls related
to use of "legal funk" several reports are coming about
regarding pt medical issues resulting from the use of "legal
funk" i have heard conditions ranging from unresponsivness to
seizures to combativeness and more. has anyone else dealt with
this yet? what are some clues on the scene that this may be a
possible cause? what should be done about the legality and use
of this substance?

I have run into once so far. The Pt. stated he thought he was
having a heart attack and it felt likehis heart was going to
explode. I have heard from other medics that it is a pretty bad
high. Can makes people go crazy. Hope they make it illegal
soon.

I arrived to a call where the patients wife stated her husband
and smoked "something". When we arrived his arms where in the
air and he was staring. I thought at first he may become
combative. His wife was a nurse and took his pulse and it was
120. When the ambulance arrived they said they smelled legal
funk smell. And when he started coming around he did tell them
that is what he had done. And they transported him to the
hospital.

Working at a public school, we have a counselor from the Insight
House that has personally told me some of the issues related to
this stuff. He mentioned many of the aforementioned effects of
Legal Funk. He stated people have actually died using this
stuff. He assume it will only be a matter of time before this
stuff is illegal.

Have not run into it yet where it was confirmed. Sad part is
that kids feel it is a great thing. Will not understand until
something happens to someone close to them. Hopefully illegal
soon.

I ran into it two or three times and each time it was a little
different, one was unresponsive, one had severe chest pain and
one person was throwing up violently. It is definitely a bad
thing to deal with and who knows why you would want it in your
system.

From what I have dealt with in the past is that the pt. seems to
verry disoriented and not aware of his/her surroundings. Then I
had a patient talk to me as if nothing was wrong and then have a
full blown seizure. I feel it should be leagalized this stuff
is nasty and dangerious. It also causes a danger to the EMT
because the effects are not fully known. An Emt might have a
patient that is disalusional and attempt to harm an EMT beceause
of his altered mental status.
