other uses for our equipment

I would give high concentration O2 and long board
immobilization. Could a KED with blankets be used to help
immobilize the pt? I know of a call we had to bring an elderly
woman down very narrow stairs and narrow house in general and
the KED helped immobilize her on the board she had a broken hip
with shortening. With the KED we were able to bring her down the
stairs very secure.

Great alternative use of the KED..remember though that you put
the KED on upside down to get the right fit to immobilize the
hip area!
Are there any pieces of equipment which can be used for
something other than what they were spefically designed for?

use of a blood pressure cuff as a tourniquet is an acceptable
method, use of guaze as a barrier for an ice pack or heat pack,
even something as small as use of a glove as a writing pad for
vitals could be considered unconventional use of equipment

I was on a call and the ambulance creaw showed me how to use a
KED for a elderly PT with a hip injury. After they had the KED
secured he said his hip felt good and you can see the relief on
his face. Great alt use.

I would say the b/b cuff is a popular one and seems to work
well. Just would just suggest to make sure you know what
you are really doing before you apply one
