Description:
We are currently involved in two studies exploring the nature of
Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia. We wish to examine the
genetic material (DNA) of individuals within families where
Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia seems to be present. The
purpose of these studies is to improve our understanding of
mental illness.
In the first study, Study A, The University of Chicago is
collaborating with the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).
We are looking for one participant with Bipolar I Disorder,
Schizoaffective Disorder, or Schizophrenia with at least one
other affected or unaffected immediate family member who is
willing to participate. Each participant must reside in the
Chicago area. In this study, participants will undergo a
diagnostic interview which takes 2-4 hours to complete at the
University of Chicago, and several physiological assessments
which take 8 or more hours to complete at the University of
Illinois at Chicago. Each participant will be reimbursed per
assessment completed (maximum reimbursement per participant is
$190).
In the second study, Study B, the University of Chicago is
collaborating with the Intramural NIMH in Bethesda, MD and Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. We are looking for at least
one participant who suffers from Bipolar I Disorder or
Schizoaffective, Bipolar Type and at least one other available
family participant who has any type of Bipolar Disorder,
Schizoaffective Disorder, or recurrent Major Depression.
Participation includes undergoing a diagnostic interview which
typically takes 2-3 hours to complete and a one-time blood
sample. No travel is required. We would pay $75 per participant
at the completion of these two tasks.
