I like games where you have various skills that you can train
and random quests. Games that don't follow a strict story line
and allow you to essentially create a second life.

You have the same mindset as me, then. Good. So no TF2-like
       things?
Skyrim is good for that, but it's singleplayer. The Elder
Scrolls Online would suit, but it's $60 to buy and then $15 per
       month to keep playing.
ArcheAge is one I'd like to look further into. Free-to-play,
       download.
Star Citizen, though . . . Extremely promising. Paid game,
       download, release in 2016.

I don't really know much if anything about TF2.
The last two seem good. The problem with the last one would be
finding a way I can secretly buy and download a game...

It's bloody expensive right now for a dogfighting module, but it
looks promising, and they've already got organisation support.
It'd just have to wait until July.

Lowest amount is $45 USD for the starter ship, starter hangar
and a pass into the dogfighting thing.

I vote NO for that. The best games are the ones where real life
money cannot get you much if anything at all.
