Chronicles of Jobot
By: ButterFire Date: February 14, 2016, 5:13 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Written by Jo0 Marion 'ButterFire'. Edited by K00 the Gentleman
The first installment of my Sci-Fi thriller.
Following the numanonymous (numerous and anonymous combined [I
so clever]) excursions to the Inrazimadian backwaters of the
Inrazimad Chat (one could say Inrazimad’s version of
Tasmania); a particularly interesting conversation with
aristocracy of Inrazimad, it was conceived of a brilliant idea;
to bestow upon Jo0 the honourary title of ‘Jobot’.
Of course, as common with all brilliance, there was to be a
great implication of the idea some time in the future.
That implication was quite simple, really. And it was perhaps
the best way to implicate a name; after all, what better purpose
was there for a name other than that of which to be used as one?
And thus, Jobot was inherited to a line of massive, bipedal war
machines of Jo0’s creation. The first Jobot came out in
early February, complete with arm-mounted gatlings and
shoulder-mounted missile pods. It completed the field testing
successfully and was fielded in battle for the first time in
late-March.
The second Jobot, Mk II, rolled out in early May. It was
technically superior to the Jobot on paper, but extremely hard
to pilot. Due to the expertise required to pilot the craft, only
a select handful of pilots were able to successfully pilot these
mechs. As a result, the Mk II was used exclusively by the most
elite of pilots.
The Mk III was built in late October but failed to pass the
field tests due to mechanical issues (probably having to do with
the power core) which caused catastrophic system failures
mid-operation and it was quickly abandoned thereafter. The Mk II
was used to train new pilots instead of combat operations.
But, in August of the next year, after extensive development and
testing, the Mk IV came out and was a huge commercial success,
setting the benchmark for all mechs to come. With more powerful
versions of the original weaponry on the Mk I and even better
shielding, systems and armour, the Mk IV was hailed as the first
true successor of the Mk I.
Even Jo0 herself shutting down and retiring her own, heavily
modified, Mk I in favour of the new Mk IV. The old Mk I she
owned, the first Jobot ever built, affectionately named the
Jobot was stored away in the hangar bay.
However, one evening, during one of the massive electrical
storms the planet of ButterFire is infamous for, Jo0 forgot to
close the massive roof of the hanger bay. Lightning struck the
Jobot and the sudden charge rebooted systems and the machine
whirled to life. The A.I., nicknamed ‘Ben’, designed
and installed just three month ago by K K, woke from its
otherwise eternal slumber and the mech took its first step
forward in a month. The huge metal legs sloshed around in the
ankle-deep water, which was filling up in the hanger bay, as the
bipedal war machine marched itself to the hanger doors.

Following the numanonymous (numerous and anonymous combined [I
so clever]) visits to the Inrazimad chat, and a particularly
interesting conversation with those of the higher-rung
Inrazimadians it was conceived of a brilliant idea; to nickname
Jo0 as ‘Jobot’. And of course, like all brilliant
ideas, there was to be a great implication of the idea some time
in the future.
That implication was quite simple, really. Jo0 was a mech pilot
with (somewhat extensive) knowledge in the design and
construction of these massive war machines. She needed a new
name for her line of mechs she would build later on for herself.
Jobot was the perfect name. The first Jobot came out in early
February, complete with arm-mounted gatlings and
shoulder-mounted missile pods. It completed the field testing
successfully and was fielded in battle for the first time in
late-March.
The second Jobot, Jobot Mk II, rolled out in early May. It was
superior to the Jobot but extremely hard to pilot (but being the
one who built it, of course I knew how to pilot it). Due to the
expertise required to pilot the craft, only a select handful of
pilots were able to successfully pilot these mechs.
The Mk III came out in late October but failed to pass the field
tests (the problem was the humiliatingly low battery lifespan)
and it was quickly abandoned.
But, in August of the next year, after extensive development and
testing, the Mk IV came out and was a huge commercial success,
setting the benchmark for all mechs to come. With more powerful
versions of the original weaponry on the Mk I and even better
shielding, systems and armour. Even Jo0 herself retired her own,
heavily modified, Mk I for a new Mk IV. The old Mk I she owned,
the first Jobot ever built, affectionately named The Jobot was
stored away in the hangar bay.
However, one evening, during a massive storm, Jo0 forgot to
close the massive roof of the hanger bay. Lightning struck The
Jobot and the systems came back online (shame that no one was
there to say "It's alive!"). The A.I., nicknamed
‘Ben’, designed and installed just three month ago
by K K, woke from its otherwise eternal slumber and the mech
took its first step forward in a month. The huge metal legs
sloshed around in the ankle-deep water which was filling up in
the hanger bay as the bipedal war machine marched itself to the
hanger doors.

I just came around to reading this now, and I really like it.
When can we expect the next chapter/section?

I'm helping Jo0 edit her stories and she says She'll do a
minimum of one chapter per month.
As you can imagine, it's not writing it that's hard, it's my job
as editor that slows down the whole process;
I reckon I make more mistakes than that of which I can fix...

Hi, guys!
Apologies for the lack of updates.
I've got a version of the first part/chapter that's been
reworked by K00, and as you can hopefully compare it to the
original in the spoiler, you'll see that it's a big improvement.
I do believe it's worth the wait and happy reading!
Ben began to rejuvenate the systems of the war machine (scanning
the area, stirring the batteries and what-not), sensing no
danger, ‘he’ – for it is programmed to
identify itself a ‘he’ – deactivated the
shields, since it took the most amount of power to maintain out
of all the systems. He also deactivated the weapons and powered
down the propulsion systems, for it was dangerous to fly in a
ButterFirean storm.
The Jobot reached the massive doors of the hanger bay and pulled
them open, releasing the rising water, like opening the valve of
a pipeline. Self-preservation was part of Ben's basic program
and rainwater does not mix well with electronics. Next, the
Jobot pulled the lever that controlled the hanger roof. The
massive roof slid shut in about a minute, sealing the hanger
like an eternal tomb of robots. The Jobot stomped around a fair
bit, with Ben checking to see that all of the parts are working.
Assured that the Jobot was in full function, Ben powered down
the many systems, keeping only the core online to wait till
morning to greet his master.
But it was when he shut down the radar that he received an odd
little blip in the local area. Ben powered up the war machine
and, with the pulling of a lever, closed the massive doors once
more. The Jobot strolled over to where the new Mk IV squatted,
its visor dim and lifeless. Ben, despite being programmed with
emotions, felt no envy of his new replacement. He had faithfully
served his master for a year now and, if he was to be truthful
with himself, he was getting old and obsolete, though he could
probably still match the Mk IV in combat as he was more
experienced. He was glad to have a newer successor to be at his
master’s side.
The Jobot knocked lightly on the outer shell of the Mk IV named
The Burning Oil. A fitting name, Ben thought, noting the massive
flamethrower attached to the Mk IV’s lower arms. The Jobot
tapped lightly on the Mk IV’s visor, hoping to be able to
stir the other mech. Ben knew the other mech’s A.I. by
name. Kelly was what he was called. He was designed this time by
a man named K00, K K’s twin brother. Kelly had a much more
sophisticated vocabulary compared to Ben, apparently.
