The majority of settlers in the early era of "nationhood" were
free immigrants from Germany, Britain and Ireland, as well as
other nationalities during the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s.
The convicts themselves were often only petty criminals, guilty
of charges such as pickpocketing and stealing a loaf of bread
for the wellbeing of themselves or their families — very few
were the "murderers and rapists" that are commonly associated
with colonial Australia. As such, once they had served their
sentence, many ex-convicts were more than happy to serve as
law-abiding citizens of the British Crown, as the prospect of
vast acreages of land completely erased the inherent need for
people to act illegally in order to stay alive and well.

kill the Aboriginals. You are a convict and a murderer. The

Unless it's government propaganda that we're being taught in
school these days - which I would be really surprised if it
was... Wait... Who's the PM now? Malcolm Turnbull? The Libs?
Oh... I take that back. I wouldn't be surprised then... ::)
Joking aside, we were taught the the British settlers were
friendly to the Aboriginals. At least when Captain Arthur
Phillip was the governor, at least...
