Your summer holiday is only six weeks?
That was implied in Grace's earlier post. School ends on the
19th of December, and begins again on the 25th of January;
however, Australia Day, a national holiday, takes place on the
26th. Therefore, school commences on the 27th of January, 2016,
if I am correct in my dates.
Throughout the year, we have three other school breaks, each
approximately two weeks in length. Disregarding all other
events, such as Easter, ANZAC Day, the Queen's Birthday,
Australia Day and Labour Day, this adds up to roughly twelve
weeks of school holidays, a time that is still shorter than the
summer vacation in the United States.
Yes, but the amount of days we actually school for is vastly
different. Factoring in the weekends, we get 5 days of school
per week. Times that by the 10 weeks we get per 'term' and 4
terms per year and you get about 200 days of schooling give or
take a few depending on public holidays.
5x10x4=200
That means we get 365 minus 200 days off school. That's 165,
give or take a few due to public holidays or leap years.
365-200=165

Alright, so what's your point? I never said my dates were
perfect, and, adding all of our public holidays together would
likely yield a number of days longer than all of the public
holidays in the United States added together.
More to the point, however – I was comparing the average amount
of scheduled public holidays in Victoria to the summer break in
the United States. I was not recording the amount of public
holidays, weekends, nor the average amount of days in which
schools are open.

My point was simply to point out a rough estimate of the ratio
of school days to holidays here in Australia. (Which was 40:33)
I just wanted to compare our figures to the American ones as I
don't know about how they operate.
The reason I quoted your post was because it had some relevance
to my post. That was all.

I know. That was a rhetorical question because it is a short
break for the summer break to me.

We have two one week breaks, a one and a half week break, and
some random day long breaks.
And your school year is almost three weeks longer than ours, so
HA.

We are in school for 180 days. We have 185 days of break, 186 on
leap years. That's a 36:37 ratio.

Lucky Americans...
Well I'm going on a two week cruise in January so HA! This is
definitely going to be a better holiday for me than you, Stav, I
think. Unless I get sea sick... Then you can forget about the
whole 'best holiday' thing... We are going to Vanuatu and New
Caladonia! So that should be fun...
Hanging out with friends is always the highlights of my
holidays, I would suggest you do that.

That's about 15 more days of break you get... That does also
mean, as Grace pointed out, you spend more than half a year in
break time.
I want to live in England now...

We do have some of the best colleges and universities.
It is not disturbing to me at all. Having all of that time off
allows me to explore my interests and better myself in areas
that will be important in my future. Of course, not everyone
uses the breaks like that, but that's their own stupidity and
their own decision.
