Purchasing a Laptop

Hello Everyone,
I need advice. I'm looking into buying a laptop, but I have
never done it before, so could any of you give me advice on who
makes the best laptops and what I should expect from laptops
based on their price range?
I'm looking for a good, fast, all purpose computer. I would use
it mainly for surfing the web, watching videos, and possibly the
occasional online game. Can anyone tell me what sort of features
I should look out for? And maybe what all the technical names,
numbers, and symbols mean? If anyone could help me out, that
would be great.

I've always used Asus and Dell computers with Windows 7. In my
opinion, don't get a computer with a touchscreen. I hate those.
They're too much extra money for something that I find mostly
useless. Macs look nice, even though I've never used one, and
one of my friends said that they're quite sturdy. He took his
small Mac and was showing be how the screen wouldn't bend very
easily, unlike Asus or Dell computers, so that could be
something to take into account, but they are also pricey. Almost
by definition, Windows is probably your best choice, though, if
you want an all-around computer that's not too pricey. My best
advice probably is that if you want a good computer, go check
out reviews. Very helpful. That's all that I have to say, but I
could try to answer specific questions that you have about Dell
or Asus computers. Best of luck hunting for a good laptop!

well buy a Lenovo Z50

I have a 2013 MacBook Air, and, while it is a good computer, a
Windows laptop will probably outdo it in the long run. For
example, I prefer the Safari layout to that of Chrome, and the
laptop's default font suits me better. I've always preferred
Macs when it comes to working on the Internet, because there's
little to no difference regarding what you can run in a browser.
If we're taking games into account, however, it is incompatible
with .exe files, making many applications impossible to run.
While I can't speak for the other laptops on the market, I can
say that Macs are good computers, but, depending on the type of
programs you download, you might want to opt for something more
versatile. However, I do agree with Hunsinger; avoid the
touchscreen "computers." They lack the same processing power as
other laptops in the same price range, and are even worse than
Macs when it comes to the amount of programs they can run.

Never buy a computer solely for the operating system (OS). You
can change that. You can change pretty much anything on a
computer, actually, but assuming you don't want to go through
all of that work, I would suggest an Alienware laptop if you
have the money for it. Or any kind of Dell. I've always liked
Dell computers the most. They're long-lasting and dependable,
and they are easy to repair if repairs are ever needed.

I probably wouldn't want to spend more than 500 U.S. dollars.

What is the OS? You mean like Windows?
Also, what should I expect in regards to memory from a good
laptop? I've seen some advertised with 1 terabyte of space, how
much is that exactly? Is that considered to be a lot? If I'm
mainly browsing, would I even need that much?

Windows, Mac, Linux, Gnu... The operating system is what, for a
lot of non-computer people, defines different computers. "What
kind of computer do you have?" "Oh, I have a Windows 10." It's
just software that makes it easier to operate. It's a system to
operate better. An operating system.
By space, I'm assuming they are referring to hard drive space. 1
terabyte is 1000 gigabytes. 500 gigabytes is starting to become
standard nowadays. Most people don't even use the standard
amount of space. Since you don't seem to be a computer geek,
there is no reason I can see as to why you would need that much
space (it's not bad if you do have that much space, just don't
let that be a deciding factor). Plus, if you ever ran out of
space, it's easy enough to install a new hard drive, but it's
highly unlikely that you would run out of space with even 500
gigabytes.

Even the stuff I make on my computer barely goes past 3 GB.
But a large hard drive can help becuase it can add to the
'swap'. This swap helps in the cache and can considerally speed
up browsing speed.
