It is not only the number of people attending A&E that has
increased; evidence suggests that patients are more unwell and
more likely to require admission than in the past. So far this
year there have been more than 164,000 more admissions from A&E
compared to last year, equating to around 4,000 more per week.

As the number of people admitted from A&E into hospital wards
has increased, so have waiting times. The number of patients who
are waiting in A&E departments for admission to a hospital bed
for more than four hours after the decision to admit them has
been made has increased to 8.9 per cent or more than 90,500 in
the latest quarter.
