What amount of saving delivered by early detection of Low risk
upper gastrointestinal bleeding patients?
Estimated £13.6 million for UK (estimated £11.3 million for
England) or £22,700 per 100,000 population. Given the different
purchasing provider split in the NHS in the UK (outside
Scotland) then the non-payment for a hospital admission via a
Healthcare Resource Group would free up cash for the
commissioners but the net result would need to be a reduction in
provision of acute hospital beds. In the NHS in Scotland there
would be marginal cost savings in terms of reduced provision of
emergency endoscopy sessions and equipment only which are
unlikely to lead to cash savings as these patients are often
endoscope on routine service lists which are already funded.
