End of life care money was identified and the planning group had
6 weeks to plan the project before the first staff secondment. A
steering group identified project start-up needs. This included
ward managers identifying which staff could attend and arranging
for bank staff when possible; while community hospital staff
needed to be made aware of the plans and the reasons behind
them. Hospice staffs were prepared for the project, including
their role as mentors and teachers while supporting students and
governance issues were addressed. The hospice clinical teacher
and end of life care tools facilitator, with advice from the
managers, planned the pre- and post-secondment teaching
sessions, the workbook, pre- and post-secondment confidence
questionnaires, evaluation forms and the timetable for students
when at the hospice.
