Improved patient safety, such as reducing the risk of adverse
events, is anticipated. Within a month of completing the
secondments, staff on one ward simultaneously cared for two
patients whose symptom management required current knowledge and
competence in using subcutaneous syringe drivers to deliver
drugs for end of life care .The staff involved had been assessed
as competent in caring for a patient with a syringe driver since
completing their secondment, ensuring patient safety.
