What amount of saving delivered by providing end of life care in
community hospital?
Minimum of £39,000 revenue based on 24 patients per annum
receiving end of life care in community beds instead of acute
beds. The population of East Berkshire is 390,700 (Office for
National Statistics, mid-year estimate 2008).
The key health needs of our population as identified in the
Joint Strategic Needs Assessment are:
•
for over-65s
•
•
•
There is anecdotal evidence of a shift in case mix from hospice
to community hospital with at least one patient transferred from
the hospice and currently being cared for within the community
hospital (with ongoing hospice medical support).
Minimum savings per patient £1624, based on estimated
non-elective Healthcare Resource Group of £375 and on a 28-day
stay. Equates to £9200 per 100,000 population.
