Evidence of deliverable of Remote Monitoring of cardiac devices
       service

What is the evidence of deliverable from implementation of
Remote Monitoring of cardiac devices service?
In Sandwell and West Birmingham (which covers a population of
approximately 500,000), 537 patients were prospectively
recruited to a protocol of follow-up by remote monitoring over a
24-month period (2011–2012) after insertion of implantable
loop recorders (Medtronic, Reveal) and bradycardia (single and
       dual chamber) pacemakers.
This replaced the previous protocol in which patients were seen
face-to-face for routine follow-up by a cardiologist after
implant at 6 weeks, 3 months and then 6-monthly thereafter. In
the remote monitoring protocol, 6 months after implant,
       face-to-face consultations and remote-monitoring consultations
were alternated every 6 months. Financial and staff time savings
were calculated by implementing such a protocol. The initiative
also monitored the impact of remote monitoring on scheduled and
unscheduled care. If patients had unscheduled alerts (for
predefined criteria), a protocol dictated which alerts would be
managed by either cardiac physiologists or cardiac specialist
nurses and which required discussion with a cardiologist, who
decided if further face-to-face follow-up was necessary.
