The initiative delivers savings of £4.5 million nationally, or
£8,800 per 100,000 population, per year (based on figures from
2011–2012). This is less than the anticipated savings in
the original case study.
The conventional protocol of face-to-face follow-up would have
required 2685 face-to-face follow-up appointments over 24 months
at a cost of £322,200 (assuming a tariff of £120 per
consultation). The development of a remote monitoring service
required only 1611 face-to-face consultations and 1074 remote
monitoring scheduled downloads, at a cost of £95,264 (since
remote follow-up tariffs were Costed at just under £38),
resulting in a 70.4% absolute cost reduction.
Consultant time required for this protocol, involving
face-to-face and remote monitoring, was 1343 and 806 hours
respectively, resulting in a 40% reduction in consultant time
needed compared with conventional face-to-face follow-up only.
