Risks involved in the implementation of Enhanced Orthopaedic Rec

What are the risks involved in the implementation of Enhanced
       Orthopaedic Recovery programme?
The evidence base suggests there are few risks to changing to an
ERP, however it is important to establish that patients are
happy with the changes to the pathway, for example the ‘joint
school’. In theory, patients prefer only having to come to the
hospital once before their procedure, but there may be patients
for whom this is not the case, and who do not prefer one long
appointment to two or three shorter ones. (A small survey,
carried out by one of the trusts in the region, suggested that
patients may prefer multiple short visits rather than one long
one covering everything. This is being repeated on a larger
scale within the trust to establish whether it reflects the
       majority view.)
It is also important to measure other outcomes as well as length
of stay: this is used as a proxy for improved quality of care.
However, re-admission rates must also be monitored.
