Significant improvement in patient safety and reduction in
adverse events. Hypoglycaemia can lead to loss of consciousness
and coma. Usually patients have symptoms and are able to take
preventative action before the hypoglycaemia results in
unconsciousness. However, some people lose these warning
symptoms and their hypoglycaemia awareness. Data from the DAFNE
database reveal that DAFNE training provided in routine practice
is associated with significant improvement in glycaemic control,
reduction in the rate of severe hypoglycaemia (defined as
hypoglycaemia requiring third-party assistance) and an
improvement in self-reported hypoglycaemia awareness.
