       The mafia coalition is isolated, fractured and scared by the
       imminence of its electoral defeat and the loss of impunity and
       control over the State. Their lack of scruples, their dominance
       of the Public Prosecutor's Office and their fear make them
       extremely dangerous. In the coming weeks, the future of
       Guatemalan democracy and the country will be decided in several
       fields: the judicial, the electoral and in the squares and
       streets.
       The role of citizens will be critical and, once again, the
       possibility of a new spring for Guatemala will depend on the

       Cuban law, suffocatingly tied to specific ideological and
       political guidelines different from those informed by the
       Constitution and ethics, could not resolve —neither
       scientifically nor technically— the legal dilemmas derived from
       those days. All national legal systems, of any country, have
       been produced by a state power apparatus and have political and
       ideological burdens. The law does not declare itself, then,
       independent of a political machinery.
