ROSS CHISHOLM RE-SIGNS WITH HARLEQUINS AND SETS HIS SIGHTS ON
TROPHIES
Ross Chisholm has signed a new contract with Harlequins, the
Club can confirm.
The versatile back, who has been with the Club for 10 years,
said he was delighted to be re-signing with a club that has
created an exciting, winning environment under Head of Rugby
Paul Gustard.
Chisholm, who began his rugby at Haywards Heath RFC and
progressed through the Academy system with Harlequins during
loan spells with Esher, played a key part in Quins winning the
Challenge Cup in 2011 and started in the LV= Cup final in 2013.
He scored four tries in 12 appearances last season and Gustard
said he had been very pleased with his progress this season.
“Ross has always been a brilliant member of the Harlequins squad
over the last 10 years and it was felt by all the staff that his
constant energy, willingness to learn, team-first mentality and
talent were deserving of a new contract where we feel we can eke
out more from his ability,” said Gustard.
“His ability to perform to a high level either at Full-back or
on the wing means he is great asset for us and this versatility
will be key as we reduce the size of our squad and develop our
game.
“He is consistently looking to improve himself as we have seen
when he stepped up at Fly-half in the Premiership Shield this
season and taken on the kicking responsibilities. He is a very
coachable young man which is a key characteristic in retention
and recruitment as we look to build on momentum and improve our
individual and collective responsibility.”
Chisholm said: “This has been my Club for over 10 years and I
love playing my rugby here. There is an attitude in the camp
that everyone has bought into across the playing staff, the
coaching staff and everyone at The Stoop and Surrey Sports Park.
“Gussy has come in and given us huge belief this season, forging
a winning environment that we now want to capitalise on.
“It means so much to be re-signing with Harlequins with its
heritage and prestige across the globe, and now we are looking
forward to adding a new chapter or two to that story with some
silverware.”

How old is he now? I'd love to see him get a proper run of
games. Would be nice to see him get the nod at full back during
6n.

Pretty happy with that. With Alofa and Walker (Probably) going,
you need a couple of utility backs who can do a job in the
squad. Always felt Chisholm to be solid and reliable.

Happy with that. I've always liked Ross as a player. The
horrific injuries seemed to rob him of his real top end pace, or
maybe the confidence, but he's still very fast, solid under the
high ball, turning into a decent kicker, versatile and a good
last gasp defender. I'm not saying he'll ever be first choice
but a very reliable back up and squad member

Yes agree his injuries unfortunately robbed him of reaching his
full potential but is still a good squad player and I am more
than happy to see him stay

Remembering him leaving Johnny May for dust at Kingsholm. At
one point quite a few years ago I thought he was more likely to
be playing for England than Brown

Didn't see this coming but I guess it does make sense. I clearly
have a very different opinion of Chis as a player to most on
here so fully braced for the backlash...
Issue for me is I'm never excited to see his name on the team
sheet - there's always someone I'd rather have playing. At full
back it's Brownie, Morris, even Lang before Chis for me and then
at wing take your pick: Earle, Gabs, Murley, even Viss/Walker
(if they stay - or in all likelihood then whoever comes in if
they don't!)
Not trying to be brutal but he must know that we're just keeping
him for his ability to cover two positions (10 as well in Prem
Cup/A League maybe) and his "team-first mentality" - i.e. he's
not going to kick up a fuss when he hardly ever plays in the
Prem/European games. Which is fine and useful I suppose in terms
of rotation for frankly less-important competitions (Prem Cup, A
League). Just odd.
I guess what I'm saying is I can't help but think this is at
least in part to persuade younger Chis to stay - as he is a
must-keep - but in an ideal world this is the type of player I
would have thought we'd want to cut loose if we want to improve
the squad to a consistently top-of-the-table squad.

This.
Expect James to be announced as a long-term extension before the
week is out. Ross is, at best, cover and in my view should have
been moved on - not least because I could see a new challenge,
and a decent run of games, helping to bring the best out of him
(something we've sadly not seen at the Stoop for many years
now).
That said, holding on to his brother is a keystone of the plan
for the next five years so if this is what it takes, I guess I
can get on board with that.

You're not seriously suggesting he's been given a contract to
keep his brother happy are you??!! Come on!
