Five-star show by Quins
Newcastle Falcons 17 Harlequins 38
Ross Heppenstall, Kingston Park
January 6 2019, 12:01am,
The Sunday Times
Consummately professional, ruthlessly efficient and clinical
with the chances that came their way, Harlequins produced a
highly impressive display. They outclassed Newcastle and had the
bonus point sewn up by half-time on a day when Mike Brown
entered the record books.
The long-serving full-back, overlooked by Eddie Jones for
England’s autumn campaign, made his 308th appearance for Quins,
breaking the record set by Grahame Murray in 1973. The
33-year-old, who harbours hopes of adding to his 72 caps, was
among several visiting players to catch the eye on a
despairingly poor afternoon for Newcastle.
“To play 308 games at one club is an unbelievable achievement
and Mike must also be the most capped England full-back of all
time,” Paul Gustard, Harlequins’ head of rugby, said. “That just
shows you his resilience, tenacity and skill.”
Newcastle are nursing a lengthy injury list but their spirits
never sagged and they fashioned two second-half tries from
Vereniki Goneva, the wing, and Callum Chick, the No 8. Overall,
though, and certainly for the first 40 minutes, this was a
horrible afternoon for a club who enjoyed their best season for
16 years last term, finishing fourth. They now find themselves
rooted to the foot of the Premiership table.
It took just four minutes for the visitors to take the lead as
the hooker Max Crumpton collected possession from a lineout and
sauntered over the line in the right corner. Newcastle initially
steadied with a penalty from Brett Connon before shooting
themselves in the foot in the 16th minute.
On the edge of Harlequins’ 22, Josh Matavesi’s careless pass was
plucked out of the air by Nathan Earle, who galloped clear for
an exhilarating 80m score. Quins had the scent of more tries and
a third arrived in the 35th minute when Chick denied Joe
Marchant a certain try in the left corner before the ball was
worked across the face of the Newcastle defence, where Gabriel
Ibitoye dived over the line.
The bonus point arrived in the 40th minute when Marcus Smith
drove at the heart of the Newcastle defence and found Ibitoye,
whose audacious offload ushered No 8 Jack Clifford over from
close range.
It was 28-3 in Harlequins’ favour at the break and, five minutes
into the second half, Alex Dombrandt, who excelled at blindside
flanker for the visitors, was driven over the line. Newcastle
flickered into life when Goneva touched down in the right corner
from Connon’s pass before Chick added a second from close range
for the home side.
But Newcastle had long since surrendered. Dean Richards, their
director of rugby, said: “We’re missing a huge amount of players
but the boys just didn’t turn up.”

I am sorry if this has been mentioned somewhere else on the
board (I promise I have looked), I have been thinking about Mike
Brown's 309 (and counting) appearances for Quins and have tried
to research where this sits in relation to other players, but
all of the stats I find appear to be specific to International
or Premiership only appearances. Does anyone know where this
sits in relation to other players of our great game when it
comes to overall appearances for one club please?
