I think JK was right when he said it was the strongest
Harlequins team he'd seen. I think there are many reasons for
the terrible performance that eventually resulted in Gustard
getting the job, but the quality of the squad was pretty good,
they just didn't perform. You're right, what Gustard has done is
get performances out of them and get the defence (sort of)
       sorted out.
What I hope that means is that as Gustard makes this more "his"
squad, we'll continue to improve. He's remarked on bits of it
       being unbalanced before.

Interesting point. After COS did remarkably well in his early
days, before fading, many people claimed that it was Deano's
hard work that actually won the Prem. Would those same people
suggest that the current strong showing is down to JK's work?

JK deserves credit for a fair bit of credit for what he did over
the years for the club. He made some sound recruitment decisions
which are now bearing fruit. That said I would not see a JK
directed team being in the position we are now. The 2nd half of
last season saw a disinterested rabble take the field for much
of it and while I have a lot of time for JK, I feel some of the
blame has to lie at his door too. What would he have done
differently to enact such a turnaround that he couldn’t do in
the season before would be my question. Moot point anyway I
       guess.

I'm guessing, obviously, but I still feel that Mapletoft should
take a lot of the blame (most of it) for last season. Gustard
has said that they concentrate heavily on defence, which is no
surprise seeing as that's what he coaches and he is in charge. I
did suggest last season that Easter's role may have been
somewhat hamstrung by Mapletoft being head coach and that not
enough emphasis was placed on defence as a result. Our attack in
the first half of last season was better than this season. It
would be no surprise if JK, as DOR, left the majority of the
coaching decisions to MM, and of course that can't happen now
that the roles have been split.
I think JK as DOR and PG as head coach would have worked as well
as what we have now. Obviously there would have been no role for
       NE in that situation.

It wasn't all Deano's good work, a fair but of it can be
attributed to the excellent management of Mark Evans too. COS
rode the wave of the work they'd both done and was obviously an
excellent motivator with his never ending positivity. His
recruitment though was really poor and we suffered from that
both in terms of players in and those leaving.

Agree with most of that, especially the recruitment which was
far better than under COS but rather a disinterested rabble, I'd
call them directionless. Gussy has got them playing for the
shirt and each other with systems they can understand and work
to. The change in defence is evident and attack is improving.
