The logic of signing Furbank was sound IMO. Second playmaker
meaning not everything is on Smith and able to step in at 10 so
that we shouldn’t need rely on Slevin and Bellamy stepping up
immediately. That it hasn’t happened that way in the opening
couple of games is down to Furbank’s KO followed by a slightly
strange selection down at Gloucester.
Dun was a decent signing but not the only one we needed. Surely
we can use the injury dispensation to bring in a nasty so and so
ahead of theoretically more cash being available next summer to
more properly address the front 5 issue.

The problem I see is finding the kind of people we need that
want to come to a club that is in such a mess.

But the Furbank signing “ Allegedly” on 300k is he really that
much better than Flyrone?
And can imagine how others are motivated when hearing it’s 300k
Then we get told not enough money to build the squad, it doesn’t
make sense

If the mood/results and set up dosen't change drastically, I can
see us losing the likes of Smith and others when their contracts
are up. This was always the risk when making what were fairly
small changes following a very poor season, as any slack for
time to see the green shoots by fans is greatly reduced. Two
games in, same outcomes, and its clear the attitude hasn't
improved nor has the coaching over the summer

Did we actually ever have Andre and Wilco? I’m beginning to
think I dreamed it. We seem to have specialised in recruiting
journeymen for years. And as we have become flakier perhaps
we’ve had to pay a crapness premium to attract only more
journeymen. So it has become a bit of a death spiral.

What I don’t understand is you look at some of the forwards on
the market this Summer that other clubs have signed:
Morgan
Lake
Wainwright
Lawes
N Smith
Barberry
Martin
To name but a few who are quality players and will add grit. It
makes no sense what we have done as a club over the last few
years.
Either the club need to come forward and say we’re skint and not
paying up to the cap.
Or, we are completely incompetent and therefore resign!

Marler called out Ed Spokes years ago and was told to “be nice”
by The Major. Looks like Marler was right.

The Gloucester game brought back bad memories of the Paul
Gustard coaching days when the team were playing with no soul or
passion & seemingly no direction.
This Ed Spokes, who is apparently in charge of recruitment,
doesn't seem to understand his job brief. As previous
contributors have pointed out we are always rummaging in the
bargain basement for new players, admittedly apart from Furbank.
Neither of our current centres would get in other Prem teams
starting 15s yet we keep persevering with them. The team
selections are confusing, Anderson on the wing for example when
David or Green should be first choice.
We are not told by the club why a certain player may not be
playing or if injured but other clubs publish details of their
player injury lists & also when players are expected to be fit
enough for selection, but not with Quins.
I can't see any improvement without a reset of attitudes from
the top to the bottom.

Without wanting to constantly be talking about "being in
transition", the club does have a bit of dead weight clogging up
the squad, but is also trying to bring through the youngsters.
In the scrum Williams and Lamositele are presumably going to be
off at the end of the season, but we have brought in Sweigers
and Johnson-Holmes. Els left, but wasn't a big loss. And as
others have said, our front row could be a mix of England and
Argentina starters. There's not much more that you could want,
realistically.
In the second and back rows we lost Lewies, Lawday and
Launchbury, and signed Dun. Two of those leavers were pretty
injury prone, so I don't know that it leaves us worse off. The
club is trying to bring through some younger talent like Carr,
Green and Browne, but Chis retiring and Dommers injury does
leave a gap. CCS does need to step up.
In the playmaker positions we have a decent 9 in Porter and a
hugely promising backup in Friday, an international 10 in Smith
with decent backup from Furbank, plus other younger talents like
Bellamy.
In the centres we have players bordering on international
selection in Northmore and Beard, plus the likes of Bradley and
Waghorn as the younger players.
For the wings and fullback we are pretty well stocked with a mix
of international and non-international talent.
Overall we don't have a bad mix already - the youngsters will
develop and we will make other signings once some players leave.
We can't complain that we don't sign experienced internationals
and also that our young players always leave to do well
elsewhere - those are contradictory positions. Either we develop
players or we buy them in.
What we do lack is edge - Lewies always seemed to make a huge
difference when he played and was clearly a good leader. Dommers
absence will be felt here too, but there are others who really
should be making more of a difference like Petti Pagadizábal. I
wouldn't be against making him captain and using his position to
bring the other Argentinians on as well, while giving him a
remit to get up in the faces of the oppo. At the moment we look
a bit lost, with an absence of strong characters.

No he isn’t that much better but he’s been brought in to do a
different job and allow us to play a different way. What I mean
is that while i wouldn’t break the bank for him and probably
wouldn’t have made the decision myself if it was Furbs or a top
class lock, I can see why that decision was made.
I don’t think it’s fair that his wages and him by extension
become a bit of a lightning rod for the litany of things that
are wrong at the club, which I think is in danger of happening.
