Usual interesting nuggets, but for us -
Harlequins boss Jason Gilmore has warned it will be another
season before the club can compete with their PREM rivals in the
transfer market.
Quins were only able to recruit six players this summer,
including George Furbank from Northampton Saints and Bristol
Bears lock James Dun, while 13 players left, as Gilmore says
they needed to do some housekeeping.
“We’ve had to tidy up what the cap looks like, to be able to
free up money, so we can put that into good players. But we’re
still another cycle away from really getting that salary cap
where we want it to be,” he told Fissler Confidential.
The squad is massive at the minute (think it was 75 last count,
granted that is if you include short term contracts) so curious
to see what he means for that.

It'll be waiting for contracts to expire I imagine. I
immediately look at Titi Lamositele and Harry Williams - two
experienced international (ex- in Williams' case) props who
would not have come cheap and have done absolutely nothing to
advance our cause on the field. I can't see Kerrod being with us
next season either - although he's presumably a few tiers down
in terms of salary.
Trying to be objective, too, you'd think this is Chisholm's last
season with us - unless he can miraculously resolve the injury
problems that have plagued his career. Northmore is in danger of
starting to look like a liability as well. Northmore is
definitely less perilous for now, but as much as I like having
both these guys in the squad on the basis of what they are
capable of, I could also understand the backroom making harsh
judgement calls on both if we get to the end of this season with
each having only a hatful of appearances.
That's 4-5 senior players right off the bat. I would imagine
we'll be in the market for another FH for next season to backup
Marcus whenever he's on England duty... and there's already
rumours swirling about Seb Atkinson bolstering our midfield
(although maybe this means Bryn Bradley is going to cash in his
chips and move across the Severn Bridge).
We definitely need another front line hooker and could probably
use another hulking lock too (as per usual).
That's where I'd be looking at rebalancing the squad... but
regardless of what I think (and without meaning to be too
positive) I do have a creeping feeling that Gilmore does
actually have a plan. It's giving reason for cautious optimism.

All reasonable shouts TBQ. And retention decisions will be
influenced by how well the likes of Carr and Kerr show up this
season. Hopefully we already have a few heir apparents in the
squad.
Without prejudging the season ahead, hooker, tighthead and 12
remain the most obvious positions to splash the cash once
available.

What would you rather he had said? Most players are on three
year contracts and he was only confirmed in role after most of
the transfers in the market were inked (but not announced).
It’s been said several times over the past few years that it
will take a new DoR 2 recruiting cycles to get the squad shaped
the way they want, so this isn’t really new news.
Would you rather he’d lied? Or said something vague but
comforting?

Good on Gilmore for calling things out a bit. We have some
serious deadwood in the squad and if he gets the overall quality
up, it’s worth waiting a year. Deadwood that isn’t even fit
when needed just to make things worse.
