The strange thing about the whole Champ clubs argument is if you
look back at the 12 team league in the 2001/2 season.
You have 9 of the present teams, 2 teams that folded (Wasps and
London Irish) and the team that was promoted Leeds Tykes, who
also finished bottom of the league but were not relegated
because Rotherham Titans ground did not meet the MOS.
So we with the exception of Exeter who eventually purchased
Leeds P share, are the same as we are now, the big clubs have
always been the big clubs with minimal change.
Relegation has just been a potential financial disaster for both
the promoted and relegated sides, Ealing are never going to be
the next Exeter as they have a tiny fanbase, and are not going
to move away from a very lucrative location that is used for a
large number of other sports, to build a stadium that would be
empty, Worcester have the potential to be a Prem club if they
can find the investment, of the others only the Pirates if they
had a suitable ground have the potential level of support to be
viable.
The only way that is ever going to change is by club rugby
becoming more popular, encouraging new supporters and becoming
economically sustainable without constant operating losses, the
old system did not work, the new one may or may not, but it is
worth a try.
But the whole we have had our aspirations stolen by the RFU and
Prem clubs is just not historically accurate, nothing has really
changed for a quarter of a century, why would it change ever
with promotion and relegation.
