The powers that decide the rules of nationality have
deliberately made them vague so that each country has the chance
to boost their squad quality. This in turn improves the
competitiveness of the international games. Imagine all the
Celtic nations squads without any foreigners in them. And us to
some extent. (tongue pushed slightly into cheek) We’d all be
(even more) hopeless.

The celts without their NZ/Aussies would be considerably worse.
It's the Scots and Irish really for some reason the Welsh
haven't done it too much in my recollection. I agree with birth,
I agree with parents, I disagree with residency at 3 years, but
it's 5 now which seems better. I quite like France's attitude
that you have to be a citizen to play. Parents is sensible,
Grandparents is far less so.

That's not the full statement I made. Why did you cut off the
rest of the sentence? It ended with "the moment they were born".
Of course only quoting half of it changes the meaning.
As my statement said, they were: qualified to play for England &
qualified to be considered English from the moment they were
born. This makes them very different in this conversation to
people who "converted" as a result of time spent in the country
with no other criteria. If you like, the same point can be
rewritten as "they had no need to go through a qualification
process, because they were English from the moment they were
born" if that makes it easier to understand.

You've gotten yourself confused I'm afraid. I'm not arguing
against any of the rules. I have stated that some teams exploit
the rule in a cynical fashion, but at no point have I argued
that a player qualifies when they shouldn't. This particular
diversion is whether English people who happen to be born
outside of the country are a fair comparison with a non-English
person whose qualification comes later in life from residency
alone.

Wales did it quite a bit but then got burned as a result (Shane
Howarth and all that) so dialled it back a bit. I think the most
recent one was Johnny McNicholl. I guess it's hard for them as
one of the poorer unions with a terrible set of professional
teams to really attract anyone - at least Glasgow can promise a
decent European run.

The funny thing was that England had asked Howarth to play for
them the year before, he had documented English ancestry, he was
called by Henry and asked if he had any Welsh ancestry, checked
with his mum who said he had a Welsh grandfather.
Played for Wales, until a newspaper looked into his
qualifications and found that the Welsh grandfather was not
recorded on the birth certificate and he had no traceable Welsh
ancestors.

It is extremely funny that Argentina's preparation for this game
was seemingly entirely focused on winding England up about the
football and all that, and then they go and play like soft sacks
of manure and embarrass themselves in the first half while
trying to be all aggro. Sure hope England can finish this off in
the second half.

Sorry all but I have to admit that Marcus has been poor tonight.
I usually defend him but, other than a decent tackle on their
winger, he’s off it.
