Red Roses pen new agreement with RFU

Tuesday June 23 2026, 11.55pm, The Times
England women’s top players will earn about £100,000 from new
contracts with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) should they
successfully defend the World Cup in 2029. This comes as part of
a new four-year agreement running until 2030 that has brought
them a pay increase in the region of 25 per cent (writes Charlie
Morgan).
There will be a guaranteed minimum of 32 contracted England
players, who will be sorted into three different pay brackets
according to their seniority and importance to the side.
Transitional contracts for emerging players will also continue,
while there will be new bonuses for World Cup selection. The RFU
has also introduced a formal mid-cycle review, which brings
scope to alter terms if the women’s game outperforms commercial
expectations.
The players’ previous deal, which brought a World Cup bonus of
£20,000 on top of a basic salary of about £50,000 for top
earners, will expire at the end of this month. These new deals
are the first to have been negotiated by Team England Rugby, the
body that looks after international players, rather than the
Rugby Players’ Association.
Meg Jones, who captained England to a grand slam in this
season’s Six Nations, their seventh consecutive clean sweep in
completed tournaments, heralded another victory for the women’s
game in this country. “As Red Roses our goal is always to be the
No1 team in the world on the field and off it,” she said. “The
investment into our programme and our pathways is critical to
that and so this is an important moment for the group and for
the game in England.”

This is a good step forward, but it needs to be followed up with
a clear plan to get the PWR to the point where it can be fully
professional.
Only 43% of PWR players are on paid contracts today - and many
of those are “pay per play” type where the player still needs a
full time day job to make ends meet.
The contracts for the 32 centrally contracted Red Roses and the
transitional players are obviously key to the squad’s success,
but it’s a measure of how far we have to go that in the game
against France England had a player who works at a dentist (one
day a week at our local practice, as it happens) and another who
played against Ms Poorfour Maj in an ACE league game last year.
